Good thread, perhaps the OP can make a summary list with part #'s and get a sticky.

I just bought Sachs hydraulic shocks for my 87 wagon and at $342 a piece cheapest I would've been screaming if they weren't German made. Sachs says they have plants all over the world but I bet the high priced stuff is German made. When I get the mounting kit from the dealer will follow up.

I would also offer Monark injector nozzles as a quality German made replacement for all Mercedes nozzles. The are particularly better for running veg oil but will do a better job with diesel than China made Bosch nozzles hands down.

Oil Filter Housing to Block Gasket 617.952 part # 6161840780.

I remember reading from one of our members that the latest Gasket had some sort of waffle pattern on it.
So, I made sure the one I bought was from a Mercedes Dealer.

You can see that both sides have the waffle pattern that is made out of some sort of hard rubbery stuff and one side has a solid bead around all of the openings.

The Gasket has a thin hard rubber side, a piece of Metal and another substance between the hard rubber other side.

So it is clear that a lot of trouble was taken to design and make the newer style Gasket. (This is the one I used on my Engine.)

The Original Gasket I removed is just a simple paper Gasket (See Last Pic).

The after market Oil Filter Housing to Block Gaskets are different.

The Victor Rinz version appears to be a lamination of 2 paper gaskets with something in between (See The pics 1-2)

The Gasket in the last pick was also listed as a Victor Rinz Gasket. Perhaps this is what the opposite side looks like.

The Victor Rinz one is sold by a lot of internet part sellers.

Ordered Lemforder tie rod ends for my 1983 300SD.

Right hand threads made in Spain.

Left hand threads list Germany on the label but have a big "Made in China" sticker on the box.

From the owner of the local MBz-BMW-VW indy shop: How do you say "Made in India" in German?

"Bosch-Germany"

So eventually will we only be able to get our parts from Mercedes, at ever-incresing prices, at the same time hoping Mercedes maintains decent quality, regardless of where their part is made?

I'm sure when Pep-Boys sells out their stock of Purolator-boxed German Mann fuel-filters, they will be replaced by Purolators from China - probably with no reduction in price!
For now, as long as my local indie stocks the German/European Mann/Mahle/Knecht filters, I'll be picking up extras whenever I'm there for another part.

Happy Motoring, Mark

Some aftermarket front end parts are and have been junk. Sometimes good for only one year. Metals are too soft I imagine.

The bosch newer style primer pump might be manufactured in China. I sourced some there some time ago. I cannot remember if there was any notation on the boxes of made in china but the box looked like it would have been of european origin. They may also have been total fakes as well but suspect not. They appeared to be well made.

Two reasons for so many poor rebuilt alternators out there in my mind. Most rebuilding has gone to unskilled labour in mexico.Or even other countries further down the economic chain. Reason two is there are many replacement alternator parts makers out there that are dirt cheap and produce basically junk. I suspect many bulk rebuilders use their parts..

I was suprised once when in a medium size starter/alternator rebuild shop at the lack of understanding of what hooking up a scope to the alternator tester would show them was not understood.

The three phase output of an alternator under test should be comparable in phase amplitude or output if you wish. I even pulled the machine out to show them the factory labelled connections for a scope. A good used scope would have set them back twenty dollars perhaps as there was no need for anything better in a low tech application such as this. It was then too late for that operation to clean up.

Anyways because they had closed their doors as a result of two many returns under warranty and duds going out. I had stopped by to examine and purchase some parts from their now surplus inventiory.

Most of it was the junk lines of replacement parts and worthless to me. The only thing I got was some american diesel starter field coils and a batch of two dollar voltage regulators as emergency spares.

I would not count on those regulators for everyday service as I knew their track record. The constant demand for ever more profit has really caused a large hole in quality. What surviving good smaller shops there are mostly use as much original replacement parts as they can get their hands on. Plus some from the few reliable aftermarket suppliers there are.

Too many chain stores that you buy a rebuilt starter or alternator from place maximization of profit over customer reliability and satisfaction. Some of them even understand what they are doing. When the dollar margin absolutly rules an operation the customer usually looses.

Everyone has to make a living. To attempt to maximise profit fully knowing the customer will seriously suffer from the approach is seriously flawed. Greed has displaced old values totally in some quarters as far as I can tell. You want to avoid being on the recieving end.

The Purolator Oil Filter (for my 617.952) I bought at Pep-Boys was made in India and the Central Tube inside of the By-pass section of the Oil Filter was not sealed on either end; free floating.
Also the Cotton Jin media had less actual Cotton than the other Filters I had cut apart.
The STP Oil Filter for the same Engine appears to be the same Filter as the Purolator except that the made in India stamp was on a different place on the Oil Filter.

Front wheel bearings for a 123/126 SKF made in Mexico. The inner seals were damaged beyond use when installing. The dust caps didn't fit either.
I used Meyle instead on one car. The box says made in China, the bearing says Germany.
Used Timken for the other car, made in France.
