I have been talking to a lady for 9 months about her 82 300d turbo. Originally wanted 15K, garage kept, serviced etc. Now we are down to the $2,500 area. Diesels are a good buy but hard to sell. I am her "only" interested party and willing to trade for remodel work. As diesel enthusiests we are a small part of the market. DIY is an economic necssity for me. They don't teach shop (auto, wood or metal) in high school anymore (thank you lawyers). So most people are incapable of maintaining one. Going to the dealer is big$$$. Indy's are good but diesels are not thier main focus.
As I have posted before there are alot of good old diesels sitting in driveways, given up for more modern, easier to deal with vehicles. It is the age of instant gratification. I love my 76 300D. Great ride, timeless look, fairly easy to work on. I make a car payment when something breaks. I (we) am/are the exception, not the rule. Last edited by Steve019; 01-15-2002 at 04:29 AM. |

That's very reasonable according to my NADA Blue book (yellow actually)... from 1992!

Believe me, there are good deals to be had. I bought my 82 300D for $2,400. It has 240,000 miles on it and it had a salvage title. I can' t tell you how many pieces of crap I looked at. I still can't believe how much people think they can get for their poorly maintained jalopies just because they are mercedes. Even though my mileage was high and the salvage title, It still was the best one I had ever seen. Ivory white with Navy blue interior, hardly a scratch. It has turned out to be all that. Doesn't consume one Drop of oil...!!!

Good Question! The Car had been stolen and the front was smashed up a bit. The insurance company probably figured the damage as more than 2,000 dollars which is more than 2/3 of the Kelly Blue book value. So...The previous owner bought it out of salvage, fixed up the front left fender and headlight assembly(easily 2 grand) and did a top notch repair job I must say. One look at the car and I could see that it has never been pulled out of a lake or set on fire. On a newer car, a salvage title can mean that it had 30,000 dollars damage but on something 20 years old, trust your own judgement and it always pays to get a CARFAX report. So everyone elses loss and my gain Prettiest and best running one I could find at ANY price.
