617.952 722 AT no load downshift
Hi,
Both my 81 and 82 have a somewhat hard upshift. I like it that way and as I understand, it's actually better for the trans. The odd thing on my 82 is that when I'm coming to a stop, no load, I oftentimes hear, and sometimes actually feel the trans clunk through the gears as it goes back. While I have heard very quiet flunks in my other w123 cars, in the 82 it is really pronounced and as mentioned, can be felt a bit... The trans shifts and operates well, has seen regular service, has full fluid, and I have no reason to think anything the matter with it. However this is noticeable... Should I be concerned?

It sounds like your modulator pressure is set to high.
If you shift to neutral, like I have to do on wifes car, it won't do it. ;-)

You could be losing vacuum. The tranny bleeds off vac for the upshift but needs vac for downshifts. Take a look at the vac system.

vac is fine and holds...
is the modulator mentioned the vacuum modulator? Could the two posts be saying one and the same thing?

Mine started clunking on the Down Shift after I had changed the Oil Filter Housing Gasket.
It turned out I dislodged the Vacuum Line going to the Modulator. After reconnecting it the down shifting returned to normal. A cracked Modulator Cap will also cause a Vacuum leak.

I dont have any leaks in the interior systems like door locks and seat backs... Bt I guess they are on the other side of a check valve, right?
Ill try to do a vac test on the AT line to see what I get.

If you leave it shifting hard - I believe you'll be promoting damage to the splines in the front planet gear assembly.
Take a look at this thread http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=299729 And follow the link in post one to see what happens if they "go" http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=297960
