Rear defroster Defogger - 240D

I think I've read everything on this site regarding this topic, but I don't seem to find the answer. The defroster on the rear window does not do anything.
I've tested all the way to the strip that goes up and down the sides that connects the wire and that gives off a nice light. But the wires themselves (all of them) do nothing.
Any thoughts?
I will say (at the risk of much ridicule) that I did touch one of the wires with the tester and a tiny bit of smoke came off it, but nothing since. I have a feeling that this smoke cannot be a good thing.
Could use some help... in more than one way.
Thanks,
Blue240D

Several years back I pulled my rear Window off to do some rust repair and also get the defroster working.
I actually Soldered the main connection Wires back onto the Window and could get conduction in the large coated areas that the little Grids start from.
What I found is my little Grid lines have oxidized to the Point that they will not conduct electricity.
If you look in the below link in post number 4 you will see one of my Grid lines that has patches and breaks of a darker Brown Colored Oxidized area and contrasted by the shiner Copper Colored areas.

Wire

Thank you very much for the info. Basically I'm trying to figure out if the wires should make the tester light or not. Secondly, how can the other side of wire frame light the tester and not have the wires do it. Anyway, I went and ordered one of those dopey little heaters that sits under the back window and connects to the cigar lighter. At least now I'll be able to see who's tailgating me because my 240D isn't moving fast enough.
thanks again...
