Novice needs a place to begin to restart this 326,000m 1981 300TD that supposedly ran last summer but now only turns over.

Getting some white smoke, Turns over quick enough. Glow plug relay works. Glow plugs show proper resistance. Considerable blow-by via the breather. Turbo is lunched but would this prevent a start? Doubtful, right?

Where do I begin?. Would like to get it running before contemplating a rebuild.

Thoughts?..Suggestions?...Ammunition?

I would check the glow plugs themselves. If you have smoke at the tailpipe then it is not a fuel issue. Do you have a block heater. If you do plug it in over night and then try.

It is in a heated garage and even after having the block heater pluged in all night, It still did not fire. It tried a couple of times..one cylinder..skip two and anouther..then nothing.

Check to make sure you have power at the glow plugs and then check each plug. If that fails then your compression is low. If it has sat for a long time the pressure may be going by the rings. Take out the injectors and pour in a couple of table spoons of oil. Crank the engine and then reinstall injectors purge the injectors glow it a few times and it should start.
