What is This Part on the 85 IP?

I am in the process of swapping parts from my Euro 85 300TD into a Federal 85 300TD and my overall goal is to simplify the car. I am swapping the manual climate control into the car in place of the automatic unit. Last night I noticed this part on the side of my injection pump and I am not sure what it is. I am pretty sure it is related to the klima system and is a part of the various monitors on the engine that are specific to the 1985 model year. I would at the very least like to disconnect the wire leading to it, but am not sure how to disconnect it without breaking it. Any ideas? Does anyone know if I can remove the whole unit altogether? You can see it in the attached picture on the engine side of the IP just below the "clear" fuel line. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Shane

You'll notice that the wire routes back to a round connector directly behind the valve cover at the firewall. Careful, that connector has a reputation for crumbling...

It leads to a 'computer' behind the right kick panel in the passenger foot well if my memory serves me right and I also think it provides some kind of information to the Klima as well as the EGR.

Hmmm.
I'm in the process of swapping in an engine from an 83 into an 85... should I keep the 85's IP in the system for the "computer"? I already know I need the trans plate for the tach to work...

Good question. I have no clear idea of what the consequences would be of not feeding the rack sensor info to that computer.

Only consequence is the loss of EGR and ARV functions. It will not have any effect on Kilma relay operations. vstech will take care of that with the transfer of the intermediate plate for RPM sensor.

I am planning to swap the manifold and turbo from the euro car so I am eliminating the egr and computer anyway. The tach was inop when I bought the federal car and my euro car never had a tach anyway. I have found that the 85 federal car has many more sensors related to the egr and klima system on it than my euro car does. I am sure that most of those sensors are also 85 specific and I am not sure how that might affect John's swap of an earlier engine into his car. I figured that box was some sort of rack position sensor and it looks like it probably can't be removed from the IP. Does anyone know how to detach the lead to that sensor at the sensor itself? Could it be as simple as just pulling? I just hate to damage things while disassembling them even if I do not plan to use them. Thanks for all of the input so far.

Shane

The lead is soldered to the sensor. If you don't want the cable hanging loose, just cut if off.
On another note, removing the sensor requires the the IP to be removed and a block off plate to be fabricated to prevent motor oil from gushing all over the place.
