Rear main seal

My mechanic tells me the engine on a 1984 300D Turbo has to be removed in order to replace the rear main seal. Does anyone know if this is true??OM617 engine.

Thanks,
Harry

Yes it is true. the rear seal is a two piece rope seal, and no, it can not be rolled in or pushed around, there are some pins that keep it in place.

Pretty good job. How many miles are on the engine? Based on the mileage you may get into a position where "While I am in here I may as replace these worn parts too". It can get kinda costly. Not only has the engine got to come out the crankshaft has to be removed.

What exactly are the symptoms? It's easy to mistake a valve cover leak or an oil filter housing to block leak for a rear main leak on these engines.
If it is a rear main seal leak, you might be further ahead to consider it an added exotic feature--the continuous oil change option.

ON most cars/trucks, in order to replace the rear engine seal, one must pull the engine, or drop the transmission. Then, the flywheel must be removed ( in most cases) for the rear seal to be R & R'd. In some MBZ cars, the motor and tranny come out together and taken apart from each other on a bench.
