lol, I need to finish several other projects before I can even voice that idea.

you are correct though, whatever drivetrain the car ultimately gets, it has to be automatic. She is not happy with the manual, though perfectly capable of driving it properly.

Nice work BTW.....I thought you were potentially planning a 617 swap????? Getting away from a diesel is verboten!!! Moderator would have to move this thread over to the Frankenstein area......

Do gas V8s bolt up to a 4 speed or would you digress to an automatic (again)?

PK

lol, thats some diesel lubricity supplement stuff, but it sure looks like tequila now that you say this.

I was helping her plan a 617 swap originally, but her uncle is all for some built chevy 350 or something instead, complete with a chevy automatic. This is all way down the line, in the meantime, the car will probably go into storage until her plans are formulated and she has the cash for this kind of fun.

Go the m110 route. Easier swap and a motor that makes great power.

I think she's seriously entertaining the idea of building a gas sleeper out of this car, as kind of a juxtaposition to its current incredible slowness. We will see
I saw a 350 SL motor and four speed manual advertised here recently.

Have you considered teaching her how to "downshift"? My 240D was extremely peppy when I downshifted . . . so much so, that the other truck drivers couldn't believe it had a diesel under the hood?

How much would she want for the car? I need one in the northwest and I'll put my 300D in storage in Florida?

I asked if she would sell and I think shes pretty attached to it. If you are looking for a winter car or beater though that is mechanically excellent, id recommend funolas 300D hes selling.
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/322686-thinking-selling-my-83-300d-turbo-whats-worth.html

She does downshift, there are a couple hills around here where she has no choice, otherwise, the only way would be backwards.

Nearby there is one of those horrendous hills that comes with a stop sign at the very top with no flat, and plenty of traffic so you end up sitting in line on a grade. In fact the very hill where the car originally failed to continue moving when the B2 blew out, but fortunately we had topped the crest and were able to roll forward through the intersection when that happened.

One day after she got the car back, she fearlessly (or maybe inadvertently) powered up this hill with the new 4-speed installed, and made it past the stop sign with only 2 feet or so of roll back, though she said she was freaking out mid hill, suddenly realizing that she had to do a hill start with cars behind her.

so some updates related to this car.

The owner is interested in fixing it up for the early fall in order to use it as a quasi limo.

In order for this to happen, the rust issues will need to be resolved, so I have taken possession of the car again to drive around and get the rust fixed as well.
The 3 main issues are a few spots of rust, an extremely loose steering wheel, and a completely collapsed front drivers seat.

The further future for this car is that after its gets used as a limo, she intends to sell it.

Im not good at body work, so I will be looking for parts to resolve the steering and seat, and other little incidental issues while my neighbor welds in sheet metal to fix the rust issues and match paints in sections.
Supposedly the steering box has been adjusted as far as it can go, and its already a replacement unit, so ill going to search for a lower mileage one this time.

Are the seat problems related to a no floor pan problem or is it just the seat? (In which case that's quite rare isn't it?)

actually the floor is solid on this car, the rust issues are around the wheel arches mostly, though theres a little on a rear floor pan.

The seat seems to be level, but whatever spings it has that keeps it high are broken, its about 5 inches lower than the passenger seat, like it was squashed completely. Worse than the last time I drove this car, another sping definitely let go somewhere along the line. Makes for a pretty ridiculous driving posture.
the seat does have 360k on it now, so im not surprised its falling apart.

I also sent in an application for the high mileage grill badges for her. Ill post some pics of the rust im going to try and get removed soon.

Other pending issues are surprise surprise, the reman LF caliper I put in seems to be dragging.

With the seat issue, use the spring box from a W126 pass side, it is a direct swap for a W123. I used one from a 90 or 91 SEL for a 82 240D. the second gen 126 has some up grades to the seat springs..

I mention to use the pass side because it doesn`t get the use the drivers side does.
