Best Place to Sell ??

1991 300D 2.5 Turbo 130K - New engine

After spending ~10K for a MB engine replacement at a dealer - see previous postings by athan01 for the whole sad story- there is a very good chance that I might have to leave the country in a few months.

What would the best place be to start looking into selling my MB ? I live in Queens NY and I dont see many diesels going around => Hence not too many diesel fans here. I don't want to leave it for the last minute and I cannot take it to where I go - they drive on the other side of the road + not worth shipping.

I know people in this forum prefer to buy MB diesels than sell but ... where would people buy one from ? Any experiences ???

Thanks a lot
Andreas

Diesels are popular in areas with old money, moderate wealth or just plain frugality. A good place to seek a buyer is in New Jersey, pref. Monmouth County and other northern/central counties. Another good place is Florida. Ft Lauderdale/Palm Beach area seems to have a perponderance of them....

You might try the Bargain News in Connecticut.. As I recall, print ads are free, and picture ads are very reasonable, though I may be a little dated on that. Excellent publication in a rich area..

Anyway you can keep it? My 300D sits in my garage in the States most of the time as I work overseas, too. A friend starts it up and takes it for a spin every couple of weeks. However, I enjoy knowing it is there and driving it when I come home. You may lose money on the sale and you will probably want another one when you get back, so consider leaving it with a trusted friend!

My $.02, anyway.

Unfortunately, this is kind of a "permanent" move. I am not from the US originally, just been living here for the past 10 yrs.

Someone mentioned eBay to me in the past.

Any experiences with eBay anyone ?

I had a great experience buying off ebay. Between a number of my friends, we've had 4 good experiences and 1 horrible one. I have sold other items and found it to be great.

Regarding the selling of a diesel benz, I think it would probably bring you the most exposure compared to other options. The diesel community that surfs ebay is knowledgeable with very specific tastes.

I've had good luck selling cars on ebay. My advice would be to set a reasonable reserve and a "buy it now" price, as well as including *good* pictures and good information with the listing. However, don't overdo the pictures (too long to load on many computers) and don't overdescribe the car, just be honest and forthright.

On a diesel benz, the real diselphiles are going to be looking for service records, rust, originality, condition of wear items, does the a/c work, does it leak oil, etc. All the issues you read about on these boards.

The cars I have sold have ended with the "buy it now", which is usually higher than what I expect to receive.

That said, sometimes it takes a few tries.

I have never sold a car on ebay, but I have been selling other items for quite a few years. It has actually made my antique silver business profitable!

In my expieriences as a long time seller, an honest description (no extra flowery, "its so beautiful and amazing" *****), and lots of good quality but quick loading pictures. If you are able to make an HTML template that looks nice, it helps immensly. Even if it is as simple as making seperate information paragaphs and picture captions, it makes the listing much more proffessional and convincing. Having a good feedback rating helps also. If you are a new seller, try selling something else first to get some good feedback. Buyers are always wary of sellers with a 0 rating.

I would be happy to help you get up a good looking listing if you decide to sell it on ebay.

Hope this info helps and Good Luck to you!
