Transmission mount R & R

Need to do this to friends car 617 -- 85 300TDT . Can i just jack it up and replace it? I'm worried about torquing something that should not be torqued.

thanks

Did this last weekend for the first time in about 30 min.. I think you need a 19mm and a 13mm wrenches/sockets. Really straight forward job. You don't really jack up the tranny, you just support it with the jack. I printed out pages off the FSM, but didn't even need them. If you look, it's just a few bolts.

My rear end dips alot under acceleration on my stick and when coming off the pedal it seems to be a bit herky jerky. I was wondering today if it was just transmission mounts or shocks or what. The rear end appears to be fairly tight bouncing up and down on it.

Winmutt, that sounds more like a differential mount or subframe mounts. I need to do that on mine. The tranny mount deffinately made a smother transition between park and drive/reverse. Slightly smoother acceleration. Do you get any noises to go with that sagging rear end?

No but it is a stick and I def get more accel out of it than my wagon (which has SLS so I have little to compare the suspension to). How bad is the diff mount? About same as transmission?

I think it's about the same process, but with less bolts. I've heard a new one shores up the rear end a bit if the old one is bad. My rear end looks low all the time, even when in park.

rear mount is easy

I just changed mine. Took about 30 min. Placed the rear wheels on the car ramps. Put the jack under the diff. Remove 4 bolts holding the mount to the car, and 2 big ones holding it to the diff. It is on the backside, not on the top. Made the car ride better, and sit higher.
Great improvement for easy cheap job!

Ill need to jack this tranny. The old mount is completely gone. Thanks for reply. This car was something else. All 3 motor mounts were completely obliterated. The owner said my car is "running rough" No kidding. The whole body was shaking , all the way back. I wouldnt have thought 3 would go at once. I already did the front ones and when that didnt solve it looked at rear one (tranny) and saw tranny was sitting on carrier frame.

cheers
