If you have gunk in the motor it probably has not had its oil changed as it should at some point in its life. If you are worried about the cam oiler take it out and give it a good cleaning. Beyond that removing the oil pan and cleaning it might be a good idea too. Then use good oil and change it when you should and drive it on the highway as fast as you feel safe to circulate and let the oil clean out the motor.
I agree that its not a good idea to mix in the atf, or anything like.
I had a friend 30 years ago who liked to drain his engine, fill it with kerosene and run it for a few minutes to clean it out, then drain that and refill with oil. That seemed very risky to the bearings to me.
I had another fellow who wanted to drive his car someplace, drain the oil and drive it back to the campground before refilling. Crazy.
