my 87 sedan I sold, threw a belt

OK, I just got off the phone with the new owner... he says the car has a problem, he was driving, and all the dash lights came on, so he CONTINUED DRIVING TO THE NEXT EXIT AND ON TO HIS COUSIN'S HOUSE...

he says it was less than a mile, and the motor temp did not climb above 120.
I told him to open the hood and see if the belt was thrown, or broken.
it was not on the car, and he says the a/c compressor pulley is slanted, so it must have failed.
anyway, I told hit he should have shut off the car, and called from the highway for me or a towtruck, and he said his phone was dead, so he drove to his cousin's house less than a mile down the road.
as much as we struggled with the temp gauge on this motor, and how drastically important the temp is on the motor, I just cannot imagine him driving with dash lights on...
our schedules don't jibe until saturday, so I'll look it over then. I'm REALLY hoping nothing got damaged, but I don't have any warm cuddly feelings...

If the Buyer test drove the Car before the sale and knew there was no issues with the Car when he bought it is really His problem. Unless you said you would give Him some sort of warranty.

His conduct after He saw the Car was in trouble also is His responsibility.
He made a decision to drive the Car possibly to death.

This sounds like the sort of luck I have we I try to earn and extra Dollar selling something.

Unforunatly the most babied and well cared for Car can suddenly develop a problem.

Buying a used Car is always a gamble; it does not matter if it is a Private Party or Used Car Dealer is the Seller.

I had a similar experience with a '67 SDL that shredded the belt on the Interstate. I nursed it to the Rest Area 1/2 mile away, rather than leave it on the shoulder. My wife and I were more comfortable at the Rest Area waiting for the tow truck. It turned out no damage had been done to the engine that continued to run thousands of miles after a new idler pulley and a tensioner.

It may not be as bad as you fear...

You sold it to him presumably without warranty and usually most people know that when all the dash warning lights come on, the car should be shut off. I'd say give him advice at the very most but belts can break, even right after replacement, cause $**t happens and that's that.

Good luck.

All people who wish to purchase a diesel car should have to do a basic diesel knowledge test.
We can all but pray that the new owner has not done too much damage. The mile will probably be 5 miles & he probably did not slow down when the lights came on.

It doesn't sound good.

I agree that you are not liable. Parts don't go bad on a schedule so one can predict it before they go out.

Driving with all the dash lights on is pure folly.

OH, I know I'm not entitled to fix it, but he's still paying on the car...

I may be in the minority, but I agree with what the new owner did. No one wants to intentionally (or knowingly) harm their engine, but safety is first and foremost.

The difference between parked at the cousin's house, vs side of secondary road, vs side of interstate, is huge.

He kept an eye on the temp gauge to balance the risk of engine damage vs need to find safer location.

I'd do the same thing every time.

I have a friend who runs a shop. Heard years of stories.

On that basis, I would say many people don't have a clear idea what the warning lights are there for, and certainly not what the difference is between amber and red.

People show up (or call for a tow-in) after hours, days, weeks of driving with a light on. "But I was SO busy...."

Good luck with it. Let's hope it was a short mile and he was right about the gauge.

The guy is making official payments to you with a contract, or you cut him a deal and let him not pay fully up front?

IMO, if someone can't buy a 20+ year old car outright for its asking or its negotiated price, then they shouldn't be in the market at all for another car.

Sounds to me like you are too nice a guy vstech. If it were me, no car is leaving my hands until its fully paid for, and I have a signed bill of sale stating "as is, as seen, no warranty implied or given".

He should have pulled over and tossed a duct tape belt on the water pump.

Duct tape belt? Never knew...

But panty hose I've heard of before... he should have taken his panty hose off and made a belt.
