Front End Grinding 240d

So I let my roommate borrow my car while I was out of town and came back to find that it is making a gut wrenching grinding noise from the front end on take off. Usually lasts on acceleration through second gear and then goes away. Not noticeably better or worse with the engine warm.

Any thoughts on this? I'm thinking it has something to do with the transmission but I can't say. I should have time to get under it later in the week - thoughts on what to look for?

By the way, the car has 320,xxx miles, the trans has never been rebuilt, rebuilt front end about 40,xxx miles ago, rebuilt engine 125,xxx miles ago.

Wonder if he hit anything? I would jack up one front wheel at a time and check it out. Could be brakes, Bearings sticky caliper with worn down pads. you kind of have to look to eliminate possibilities.

If you push in the clutch or put the automatic in neutral when underway letting off the fuel pedal and the noise does not stop or change . It is probably not the engine or transmission.

Consider yourself lucky you did not loan him your girlfriend.

Does the grinding change with engine RPM while sitting still, or only do it while moving. This will tell you whether it's engine related or drive train related? Does the sound change pitch or is it a constant sound?

Pop the hood and give everything a good look over. Look for anything loose or rubbing marks. The air cleaner could be loose, or the fan shroud may have come loose and it rubbing fan.

No noise at a stand still - only when moving. The sound does change. It's starts pretty loud and then fades as I gain speed. It actually sounds like it's getting worse.

Update - trans went bad. Apparently something broke off and got lose and started grinding up the gears - we won't know exactly what it was until we get it off and apart. Thanks for the tips.
