300SD performance

You don't say what year your SD is. My son and I have converted three 300D turbo Diesels from automatic trannys to 4 speed manuals. Since the autos won't do anything until the rpm is up to 2000 and the turbos kick in, you're sol. However, with a manual 4 speed you can rev the engine if you're of a mind and pop the clutch and get a move on. If the pedal assembly mounting in the SD is the same as the pedal assembly mount in the 240D, then the whole swap is possible and modular. 300Ds become a totally different car!!!!!!!

Ever do a 5 speed conversion? I would absolutely LOVE a mutant 85 300D with a 5 speed.

5 speed transmission

Warden,

Yes, 5 speeds were found on many of the European 123 Model diesels, I don't know about the Sd though. Some of the Mercedes 5 speeds came with 5th gear as an overdrive and some with 5th gear being one to one, meaning that you had a close gear ration which should mean snapper acceleration.

The only difference from the 4 speed installation, is that you'd have to obtain the shift knob assembly from inside the car and the linkage from under the car to make certain that everything worked smoothly. As an example, when fitting a 4 speed to a 300D turbo, one has to add a couple of inches to the driveshaft and have it rebalanced. The 4 speed tranny is slightly shorter. we don't know yet the length of the 5 speed but it almost certainly is longer than the 4 speed. There were apparently four different 5 speeds for the 123 Models. Some apparently had aluminum bodies instead of cast iron. I've located five, 5 speeds with shifters and linkage and are getting ready to bring one in for installation, are you possibly interested in one?

ALDA problems

I just used the ciggarette butt trick to fix my tach but I did it with some foam from a shipping container. Anyway after i did this i took a look at my ALDA and There was a metal tube filled with some goo stuff that had hardened. This didn't look like it was meant to be there. anyone know what this is?

also there is a loose wire that is hanging down toward the middle of the car up by the front wheels. I have no idea what it is. I went down there and checked if there were any spots to connect it to but couldn't find any.

The loose wire hanging down in the front of the car is likely the outside temp sensor which reads on your dash. Just glue it to the inside of the back of the bumper. It should have a little rectangle black plastic sensor attached to it. Does the dash read any temp??

you right be right the dash does not have the digital temp readout though. Only an engine temp which is still working fine.
So are you saying that the wire is just extraneous?

1- Any goo in the ALDA lines is not supposed to be there. Clean it out. You may see a power increase after you clean this thoroughly - clean the fitting and ALL the lines!

2- If your car doesn't have the outside temp readout, then the loose wire isn't the sensor for it. Where does this one wire lead to? It could be related to the brake pad sensors, or possibly the A/C system, or any number of items. We need more info to help you on that one...

adiaw83,

Let them mock you if they want....but if you take good care of your SD, it will still be running great and looking good LONG after their Taurus or Honda or Toyota has been recycled into soda cans!

acceleration(lack of)

Try driving an old 220D(have owned two of 'em), and you'll appreciate what a hot rod these 300 turbo's are! Seems I read somewhere that the 0-60mph time was somewhere around 11 sec's. (verses 28 sec's for the 220D& 24sec's for the 240D) Not bad for a 2-ton car with an auto and a 3-liter diesel. I'm perfectly happy with it.

Actually, the W123 turbo diesels (82-85 300D) are roughly 13 seconds 0-60. I think the W126 (300SD) is more like 14-15 seconds. The only one near 11 is the W124, 1987 300D with the 6-cylinder OM603 3.0L engine (aluminum head, 148hp) - factory spec is 10.9 seconds 0-60. The wagon ('87 300TD) is 11.9 seconds. The 1995 E300D (OM606, 24-valve 3.0L non-turbo, 134hp) was about 13 seconds 0-60. The 1987 was the king of the speedy diesels until the 1998-99 E300 Turbos came out (same OM606 engine as the 95-97, but with a turbo added) - these babies were around 8 seconds 0-60 while getting 40MPG+ on the freeway! Bummer MB won't import diesels anymore... there's an awesome 4.0L V8 CDI diesel on Europe that we can't get here. Not that we can get ANY diesels from MB in the USA anymore...

I think the wire is related to the brake pad sensors because the light on the dash has not been comming on when the ignition is in the pre start position.

The light not coming on in the dash is most likely a blown bulb. If the wires were disconnected, the light simply would never turn on *when it's supposed to* - i.e., when the pads are too thin. The dash pulls out pretty easy and the bulb is about $2 from the dealer.

HTH,
