I have a tool at the shop that "listens" for fuel injectors clicking and lights a light whenever it detects the noise. It might be adaptable to trigger a timing light. I wonder if it has a manufacturer's name on it?

While the procedure to check timing with the drip tube is more involved, once the timing is ensured to be correct the light is a great way to monitor for change over time.

Oldest specialty tool I've used? Hmmm... Does using the original jack from my '36 Plymouth count? I've got some tappet wrenches from the '30s as well. But I think a starter growler made in the '40s is probably the oldest specialty / diagnostic tool.

What's the association between such a timing light pulse and the drip method start of delivery timing spec? I suppose you take the average of the light readings from a number of freshly timed engines as your spec.

Yep, I occasionally drive by one of the Private companies that supplies School Buses and Drivers to the various School Districts.
They have a parking lot with over 100 of those Ford Diesel extended Passenger Vans.
A Fleet situation like that is where one of those Impulse type timers becomes valuable.

I have not read on the Forums or seen in the Manual how often the Fuel Injection Pump Timing needs to be checked; does someone know that info?

Using your search it looks like the cheapest so far is made by Sealey (used to be moderately to well respected in the UK but probably not any more)

Timing Light Diesel Converter Box | Tools in Stock, UK, selling Draper Tools, Sealey Tools, Laser timing tools, Gunson and Kamasa hand tools and power tools - air power tools, air tools, body shop, compressors, electric power, motorcycl

116 GBP (probably excluding tax @ 20%)

Chapter 00 - job 0760 says check timing (diesels only) every 30,000 miles.

Where is the information that gives the correct dynamic timing for these diesel motors?
We have the static timing info. The dynamic info will be different.
My VM diesel jeep has a sensor on it that gives a signal when the injector injects. it is just like the injectors on 61X & 60x motors. It could be used for dynamic timing but what is the correct timing by dynamic testing?

Care to translate.
If its dynamic timing data then all is good.
A smart guy like you should be able to put an inductive pick up on the side of an injector & get a signal when it pops. Or find a good #1 injector out of a VM TD. they used them in lots of cars over your way.

Sorry I forget where I am sometimes...

Loose translation

Heading for second column from left is Motor RPM

Heading for third column from left is Engine oil temperature in degrees C

Heading for the column on the right shows the degrees of crank rotation delivery should happen BEFORE TDC

prüfwert is the test value

einstellwert is the setting value
