My new project: Trap-Ox Bypass Pipe. 1985 CA emissions 300D

Since my Sanden A/C bracket project has been in full swing for the past year or so, I now have a Trap-Ox bypass pipe that is in the finishing stages. I have a prototype that I am going to install on my bro's '85 CA emissions 300D. Here are the photos:

The pipe is made using 16 ga mandrel bent tubing, and TIG welded together. This prototype was made with the flanges harvested from a Trap-Ox, but the production units will be made with new laser cut flanges. I did not like how others I have seen were made, so I designed this one better (in my opinion). Others I have seen use smaller tubing, and don't square the end of the tubing that goes to the turbo. The tubing size is the largest it can be- 2" swedged to fit inside 2 1/4". The pipe is painted with high heat "header" paint. Once I get the prototype installed (and no problems are found), I will start production. I would also like to get an idea of how many people may like to order one. The kit will come with all the hardware and gaskets. I am shooting for a price of around $150 per kit....Rich

Didnt Mercedes have a campaign to replace those? or something? Couldn't the federal components be swapped instead of fabrication? Not that there is anything wrong with fabrication.

I mean its a beautiful piece of work but you can just go to the dealership for that.

OR, if you really want to draw some interest, create a custom manifold

California 617s had a huge "goiter" on the side of the engine known as a Trap Oxidizer. The campaign you are referencing was to replace the TrapOx with a TrapCat, which looked exactly the same, it just wasn't filled with ceramics that broke down and fouled the turbocharger.

The "test pipe" replaces the TrapOx/Cat for testing purposes, eliminating the offending piece. The reality is that the device actually increased emissions, but made the exhaust look cleaner by reducing the particulates.

The manifolds for the CA version are different from the Federal ones, so while it might be possible to swap them out, that also requires a new down pipe, since the turbo was mounted higher to provide room for the TrapOx.

Here is a TrapOx vs a test pipe

I now have the laser cut flanges, and the pipes are in production:

These should be ready to ship soon. I just need to find a good source for the gaskets. For some weird reason, the factory 3 bolt flange does not have a gasket. However, I will be providing one with the kit along with a turbo gasket....Rich

I did the one in Paul's picture (that's actually a TrapCat, not a TrapOx). Rich's mod is prettier and also much less expensive -- my one-off cost $400 to have built. It's nice to be able to weld, eh?

I got a box of pipes today, ready for paint.

They have laser cut flanges, and not harvested from old trap-cats, so NO cats were harmed in the making of these pipes

A lot of people have been waiting for these, and $150 incl shipping is a great price for such a custom device. I doubt you will need to ship many out of CA. I would get one except my 85 engine failed and my replacement is an 82.

I'll add to what others responded to "why this, why not just install Federal stuff?". Besides the different exhaust down-pipe mentioned, 85 CA had a different turbocharger, starter, intake manifold, air filter, and inlet ducts, plus heat shield on the alternator and bigger heat shield around the battery. It looks like the 85 starter would work on a federal car (not other way). I put the 85 CA air filter back on because I liked the "no shaking" of its frame mount (see post for custom duct to 82 turbo).

EGR block-off plate included

I am including an EGR block-off plate kit with every pipe purchased.

I am having a hard time finding the EGR gaskets cheap enough, so I may just have them made. I will be offering this kit for the Federal models when I get the manifold block-off discs made (should be soon).....Rich

Trap Oxidizer Bypass Pipes

Hi RollGuy
Rebuilding the turbo on my Kali 1985 MB 300SD and would be so happy to install one of your trap oxidizer bypass units. Are you still making them?
Thanks so much
