1985 CA emission 617 owners, You NEED This:

Now available for your California Emissions OM617: Trap-Ox (or Trap-Cat) Bypass "Test" Pipe. The cost is $150 (Postage included). The prototype was made with harvested flanges from an old trap-ox, but the production units will be made with new laser cut flanges. The pipe is 16 gauge DOM, and is TIG welded. Gaskets and EGR block-off plate included.

Here is the first candidate for the new pipe: My bro's 1985 300D.

I first removed the downpipe, turbo oil line, intake tube and other bracketry:

I then removed the 4 turbo bolts, braces, and exhaust output flange to remove the turbo:

Next I removed the 3 bolts holding the trap-ox, the EGR, and the removed the trap-ox :

The pipe installed with gasket and factory braces:

Next I installed the turbo and took it for a test drive. The final result:

The installation makes it easier to access the starter, and also will improve performance (especially if you have a plugged trap!).....Rich

Check out:
My new project: Trap-Ox Bypass Pipe. 1985 CA emissions 300D

I thought the trap ox was removed under warranty in most cars.

Maybe on the 126's with the 603, but the 617's had them replaced (under warranty) including the turbo if it got ruined. The installation of this pipe makes the area a lot cleaner, and easier to work on other nearby parts. The starter brace (if it is still there, as most people leave it off) is a real pain to get to with the trap in place, but very easy to access from above with the trap gone...Rich

603s had the trap ox replaced with a straight pipe as part of the recall. They added a cat downstream in the exhaust line post turbo.

Speaking if starters, you can now use a cheaper, readily available Federal starter with this setup.

Yes, I hadn't thought of that. That would be a good time to install this test pipe, when your starter goes bad= "kill two birds with one stone". Thanks, Rich

I now have the laser cut flanges, and the pipes are in production:

These should be ready to ship soon. I just need to find a good source for the gaskets. For some weird reason, the factory 3 bolt flange does not have a gasket. However, I will be providing one with the kit along with a turbo gasket....Rich

Before starting this job, I suggest buying a new turbo-to-intake manifold rubber seal, since those are real cheap (I think same PN for 85 CA). I had oil dripping from that junction in one 300D and fixed it (w/ turbo on) by jamming O-ring material into the gap, then self-fusing silicone tape.

Rollguy, I suggest your brother replace that evil "aux water pump" with 5/8" heater hose (I used silicone) since not needed in the lower 48. It can fry your climate push-button and probably cause the whole car to catch fire (suspected in several under-dash fires).

EGR block-off plate included

I am including an EGR block-off plate kit with every pipe purchased.

I am having a hard time finding the EGR gaskets cheap enough, so I may just have them made. I will be offering this kit for the Federal models when I get the manifold block-off discs made (should be soon).....Rich

I now have the complete EGR block-off plate kits available. The bypass pipe comes with everything but the disc, as it is not needed. The photo is of the kit I sell for all other MB Diesel engines:

thanks Roll guy!

I got the kit from Rich Roll Guy - the fabricated "test pipe and the EGR bypass." It worked great! All it took for removal of the turbo and the trap oxidizer was lots and lots of patient wrench work, with a variety of wrench shapes and lengths. Installation was even easier. I'm taking it on a long test drive next week.

the turbo, with a chunk of the ceramic insides from the trap jammed in the throat of the turbo. It didn't make it to the innards, I got lucky!

This is the offending trap ox, and EGR. I hate it.

The EGR bypass plate in place.

trap oxidizer

Help
Rich RollGuy,
Are the pipes still for sale?
I have a nasty leak between the flange and the pip on the trap oxidizer side of the pipe.
