Calling on W123 Clutch Gurus
Does anyone know whether or not the clutch kits for the 240D will work with the 300D with a five speed?
I know that when 240Ds had a manual transmission, they were four speeds generally, but I have heard they came with a five speed manual transmission also but rare. I am looking to swap out my five speed manual transmission (which is mated to a OM617.9XX), and I am thinking this would be a good time to replace the clutch and pressure plate, and anything else that gets replaced. Any info or leads would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance ! |

I don't know the answer to your question... but that is great foresight planning on replacing all those things which will be open to easy substitution while you have it all opened up..... it is amazing how many people do not do that.

The clutch should match the flywheel - I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't work except for the distance from the clutch slave cylinder to the release yoke - there might be some trickiness there if you haven't got the right thickness clutch release bearing.
These numbers might help your quest 0042505304 and 0062506703 but please check with the seller before ordering anything! I don't want to be blamed for mis-ordered parts.

That's another issue. There's nothing more frustrating than taking something apart thinking you have all the right parts and tools, and it turns out something doesn't fit, you need an odd ball tool, et cet. That's why my threads on repairs or mods are so long before I get to squeeze the trigger ... lol since I like to start and finish in a day if possible.
Hopefully someone with a Getrag 717.400 five speed has been down this road before and can opine on what's needed, issues, et cet. |

Thanks John,
Just some snappies of the inside, bearing size, or anything which could be the odd ball issue but a show stopper. Since the weather has finally cooled down, I am thinking this is something I might try next weekend since I am tired not having effectively a 2nd gear. Trying to order parts this weekend, but once I take the trans down, I am committed and I would be cranky if I had the wrong parts. |

i recently bought clutch, pressure plate and t/o bearing for my 5 speed 300 and where i got it said they could order parts for my car because they have the euro info for ordering parts. if that the case they should have part numbers for comparison. had some master mercedes place install for me because i was very sick at time. have had problems with clutch slipping and never liked clutch play from beginning .but they did not install spacer(s) between clutch slave and trans also don't think they ever adjusted clutch at top of master cyl. i have worked on these areas and improved things but tough for old man to lay upside down in car. usually it is going from 240 to 300 is problem because of flywheel. also good comment from someone who said pilot bearing.
