Thinking about this one, 1998 Mercedes Benz E300 turbo diesel

1998 Mercedes Benz E300 turbo diesel

Looks like it would be fun to pickup as a beater and eventually a parts car. Doesn't look bad for 317K, just a bit dirty. Nothing that cleaning won't fix. If I can get it for $1700, I'm tempted. This is what a 300K w210 looks like, not bad.

What say you?

Do you really need another Mercedes?

Though with one picture and no thick description, not a lot to go by. I though be sorely tempted if I didn't have a dog.

You always need another Mercedes.

This is the 2nd time it's been posted in a few months. I believe it has a rebuilt trans IIRC, which is why I am tempted. A spare 722.6 would be awesome. If I do get it, I'm going to drive it as long as it keeps driving and run it on a BioDiesel blend.

It's worth a look I think, because it's about an hour drive away from me. I haven't driven a 300K E300.

Not my first w210. I'm looking at picking up a much cleaner example, but this would be a good beater and parts car for the cleaner W210 I will be buying eventually.

I didn't see any rust in the pictures, but the pictures are horrible examples of the condition of the car anyway.

You can't go wrong. I read somewhere you can get a 6 speed manual and put it in these. With that mileage it has to have a ton of new parts. our 1999 w210 has 219,000. It runs perfect. i just filled it up with B20 and it is soooo smooth. And very fast and nimble for such a big car.

That's what I'm thinking. The 6-speed swap is a straight swap once acquired from an SLK parts car. I wouldn't be surprised if this car has a fully rebuilt suspension all around on it by now, so it probably rides very nice. Mileage doesn't scare me away, if it is properly maintained with service history.

Why not at that price less negotiation and with what you have in mind, makes sense to me. I like the fact its been around 300K + miles as well, bodes well for me I hope.

OT-Where do you find BioD blend around philly or do you DIY it?

Yes, the R170. In 1997, they were only available with automatic, so anything after 97 I'd be able to find a 6-speed box easily.

treetops: The W210s have proven their longevity so far. I wouldn't see why I couldn't get another two hundred out of this car easily, depending on how it runs in the winter. Even then I can just use a block heater if it is a little weak. They have no problem with longevity it seems (which I never doubted), and handle miles really well. My source of Biodiesel would be a friend making it for me, I haven't found anybody else in Philly that does it.

From owners' testimonials here, I'm finding that the E300s that have spent a lot of time in the elements, whether parked or driven, rust is on the alert list. Low miles in a possible rusting-environment, doesn't seem to make a difference. Areas to scope out; front spring perches, frnt suspension superstructures, undersides, and inside the doors,/front fenders.

Those were the first places I planned on checking for rust. I'd of course pay to have this car on a hoist. One of the guys on here bought a W210 in California, and found rust underneath the door seals and a few other places where water accumulated. No car is immune to rust, salt-free/snow-free environment or not.

IMO, W210s don't rust any more than any other MB I've had experience with like W123s and W124s.

I'm hoping to get into contact with the owner on this car, and find out a lot more info. I'm not getting my hopes up on it at all, but if it turned out to be something that'd be awesome. I have no problem with high mileage MBs if properly maintained and service history, as they most certainly proved their worth of longevity over the years.

That's exactly one of the testimonials I was writing about. The pics posted here (DD) were eye-opening. A coastal California car.

I'm finding that the best thing for these MB diesels are to keep them active by driving them, regardless the age and miles.
