116 300SD Transmission

Does anyone know the specific model number of the auto trans mated to the OM617 in the 1979 W116 300SD?

I will be acquiring one of these soon and need to know what else I might need from the car to use it.

I cannot find this info anywhere.

Would like to know if it will fit the later turbo 300D engines. Or anything else!

Thanks

Oh yes - because Mercedes were worried about the strength of the 722.1 they added in some sort of restrictor to stop the IP from letting you have too much fuel from a stand still (there's mention of this in the FSM but I've never actually seen what it is - I imagine it is pretty crude)

It will fit the later motors as far as I know -- I transplanted a motor from a 1985 300sd into my 1979 300sd and kept the original transmission -- but the .120 has a throttle position sensing rod, not the Bowden arrangement.

This means you lose the part-throttle kickdown that later turbodiesel models had. (Well it wasn't there on my w116, anyway.)

In modern traffic it's a bit of an irritant. You can shift down manually, of course.

Its in the parts catalog. Go to Mercedes-Benz Teilekatalog (Ersatzteile online) and put your VIN in the ID number block.

fwiw theres a 722.120 in my 81 300d. you can swap all the parts over you might need (the throttle rod really.) kickdown switch under the pedal operates the same. for vacuum control just eliminate everything on top of the valve cover and have vac going directly to the vcv
