1982 240d throttle linkage 309k miles

I adjusted the valves recently and noticed some of the throttle linkage is very loose. The rod that goes to the firewall has what looks like 2 plastic pieces that go into square holes.

Is this correct or did the previous owner made a mod?

Thanks.

I will let someone that owns a 240D speak on the details.

the part that pivots on the Fire Wall (Bell Crank, and older ones may differ from ones on newer models) get old and have issues. But off hand it looks stock.

In General all of the linkage rods that have adjustments have specific lengths that are listed in the service manual (at least they were on my 84 300D).

When I got my car it was scay slow in acceleration but once it got up to speed ran OK.

What I found was the linkage rod adjustments were so sloppy the Throttle Lever on the Fuel Injection Pump was not being pushed far enough. I picked a rod that had an adjustment and made it longer and that cured it.

Later when I got the Service Manual and found the rods had specific lengths I re-did the adjusments.

I believe the pieces you mention are part of a fork type assembly. They rot and fall off with age. Decreasing the full throttle range substantially. Just like little bushings that slide onto the forks to prevent noise

The best part though is they are really cheap if you can get a dealer to identify the part number. I had the part number earlier but it is lost for now.

My 83 240d has that set up but I never knew exactly how many years used it. I originally used a little creativity to substitute them but they are only about .50 cents each and you get the right wall thickness to eliminate all slop in the assembly.

Although that fork assembly could be considered a universal. I suspect the primary reason may have been to reduce noise transmission originally. Or some allowance for engine movement.

Maybe both for all I know. I though the remaining partial one in my case was made of rubber. It has been a long time though. One was totally missing and only a small portion of the other one remained.

The bracket on my 240D engine was missing the square plastic pieces. The one on my 300D engine has the plastic pieces. The brackets with the square holes appear to be the same on both the 240D and 300D engine.
