This may not be for everyone but I bought a HP all in one Office Jet Pro and I signed up for the HP instant ink program. I pay about $2 per month for 50 pages and if I go over that there is a small per page charge. They automatically send ink to my door when the machine reports low or even if the ink is getting close to expiration. Of course the machine is online so they know the status of your ink.
I love it, I used to get so tired of having to stop what I was doing and go buy ink, this is way better for me. (If you are one of those who is afraid of "big brother watching" this may not be for you)

Regarding the laser printer suggestion, I was going to do just that till the guy at Office Depot explained how inkjet printers have gotten so good and so cheap it doesn't make sense to buy a laser anymore when you can get a great inkjet for around $100 and even if it lasts 5 years you're still money ahead over the purchase price of a laser. Not to mention the cost of laser cartridges.

oh, and I always print out Mercedes related diesel repair diagrams.

You fell for the sales-pitch hook, line, and sinker. Most of the "home" style laser printers you get nowadays are $100-150 when not on sale. When on sale (or Black Friday sale) you can get them under $100 easily.

Now let's talk about Toner/Ink. The average inkjet cartridge will do 200-250 pages before it runs out or dries up. Far less if the printer is used infrequently. The average laser cartridge will do 1500-2500 pages, never dries out, and doesn't age. The "starter" cartridge most lasers come with is good for 750-1000 pages, the inkjet around 100 pages.

Consider the average inkjet cartridge is $20-30 and the average laser cartridge is $75-100 (we're talking genuine OEM supplies here). Assuming you get rated pages out of your inkjet cartridges, you'll be at or beyond the cost of the bottom-end laser cartridge in cash outlay. Generics are even worse! The average generic laser cartridge is roughly twice the cost of a generic Inkjet cartridge, but does ~10 times the number of pages!

Then of course you come down to life expectancy of the printer itself. If you get 5 years out of an inkjet you did really well. The heads clog, the cleaning stations dry out or jam, the paper feeds wear out, and then they have a bad habit of just going "flaky" for no apparent reason. In a home setting, you should be able to get 10-20 years easily out of a laser printer. If you get one that recognizes PCL or PS as the printer language, you will never be obsolete either, PCL and PS printers can print from ANY computer with ANY operating system that speaks a dialect they understand. Standards are a wonderful thing.

When you factor in the waste, initial cost, and streaking/drying out issues that inkjets have, they're pointless in this day and age. People look ONLY at the cartridge cost or listen to the idiot at OfficeMax who doesn't even own a printer, but gets paid commission on whatever he sells.

Maybe so but when I was looking the laser printers were $400 and up if I recall. Anyway I have not done a lot of research on the subject, and although I print things on a regular basis I don't print a whole lot of pages. It's one of those things I just want to work without putting much thought into it, that's what I'm getting right now going on 3 years without issue. When it croaks I'll probably just run down and grab another and heave this one in the trash. It's the American way.

I bought a Lexmark which was highly rated by all the big reviewers a few years ago.. the first time I replaced the toner cartridge I could not get the new chip to work

I agree with Pimpernel about BROTHER.... sometimes I have gone 6 months between printing my Insurance cards to carry in my wallet for my DIESEL 240 D Mercedes.

and it has never failed me. It is a HL 2270dw ...laser.... probably lower than most of you need...it may be wifi able.. but my stone age usb connection never fails me.

And I did replace the toner cartridge... which was painless....and they pay for the empty cartridge to be shipped back for recycling.

We had Lexmarks at work for several years. They were terrible. Jammed all the time, issues with the cartridges not working (OR NOT FITTING!!!!), and strange print quality issues that we never could work out.

They got replaced by a medium-duty HP in 2009 and we're still using it 300K pages later and no repairs. Unbelievable performance from a $500 "SOHO" style printer.

HP also does the paid return thing. They have a program you can join where you get discounts for returning used cartridges too. Saves about 10% off the cost of genuine supplies.

I've had two Canon inkjet printers, same basic model, over the last 18 years. Last one, Model MX473 is about 12 years old, still works perfectly either wifi or ethernet, admittedly with 'light' usuage. The first won was very heavily used at the time. Those inexpensive Canon's are always rated highly by Consumer Reports. If I were to replace tomorrow it would be a similar Canon. Under $100.

Fry's has a Canon MX922 all-in-one for $60. It is wifi, does everything and might fit your needs. Is a Black Friday price but looks like it is available today. We have a Fry's in Atlanta and there is one in Phoenix so they are in several different cities. You might take a look. Images.frys.com

Also have a Samsung Xpress M2020W black and white laser printer for $47. It is wifi.

Just looked again. Both are available on line and ship free.

How can they sell these things at these prices?

I have said it before and I will say it again...

Our diesel discussion forum is a family.

The regular members of this family can post ANY non political/religious topic on here.

As long as the community is helpful with the topic and it doesn't cause member strife it is good on our family forum.

Thanks for all the replies. I don't think I am going to buy another printer for now. Getting less than 2 hundred pages from a brand new printer and then buying another one to replace it just seems wrong. I will buy new ink cartridges for it and see if it has more print capacity than the supposedly partially filled cartridges that came with the printer.

What is a good and reputable after market Canon ink cartridge to get for a Canon MB2720? Can I install just the black cartridge or do I have to install the other 3 color cartridges in order for the printer to work? I almost never have to print color so that would be a total waste of money. I know I need to get a b/w Laser printer but not just yet, I'd like to get more life out of this one..

vstech - I think what he is saying is that this thread belongs in another section of this forum, not the diesel section.

I am surprised the moderators did not just move it over. I got roasted years ago by asking how to locate my underground invisible fence when I posted the thread in the diesel section. At that point I did not realize there was a section for general and non-Mercedes related questions.
