Hengst oil filter; where does it belong?
I have, sitting in front of me, a Hengst cannister-type oil filter part # E121H D01 that I received from a kind board member. We both had believed that it was for a 617 engine. However, the filter that came out of my engine was far longer and a bit wider than this filter. Fortunately, I had a second filter on hand, that fit in perfectly.
![]() It looks like this filter goes with another engine. Does anyone know which engine it goes for? Also, does anyone want it? ![]()

The 603 engine (6cyl 300SDL) takes a similar but smaller oil filter. Do not use the one you have in a 617 engine!
Maybe you could exchange it for a 617 filter at a Hengst dealer. I'll take it if you don't want it. I have a 300SDL. P E H |

I had no intention of using it in my 617.
![]() I'll see if I can find a dealer that'll take it as an exchange; if not, it's yours. AFAIK, it's complete. |

AFAIK = "As far as I know"
The filter is for the older 2.8 liter engine in the 280S I beleive. I searched Google and that's what I came up with. |

Warden,
If speedy is correct, the filter you have won't fit my 300SDL. Is the filter a combination bypass and full flow like the one that fits a 617 engine? I thought only the Diesels used the combination filter but I may be wrong. We better check the part number but I don't know where a dealer is that sells Hengst. I looked up the filter in Fastlane. Click on Mercedes Benz, 1987, 300SD, Engine Mechanical, and Oil Filter Kit. It has a P/N of A6002-21038 but I think that is Fastlane's order number. There is a small picture of the filter there. Click on small picture to enlarge. Does this look like the filter you have? Just thought of something else: You could take the Hengst filter to a store such as Pep Boys, Auto Zone ETC. where they sell oil filters and compare the Hengst filter to one of any brand on the shelf that fits a 300 SDL. No hurry on this, next time you visit this type of store is fine. P E H Last edited by P.E.Haiges; 09-12-2002 at 12:08 AM. |

Going by the picture, it's not for a 300SDL. I did a search on Fastlane for a filter for an '80 280SE, and it looks enough like this one that it's probably it. So, I'd guess that speedy's right. Want a nice Hengst 280 oil filter as a prize? ![]() I guess I'll put it in the Parts classifieds...thanks!
