Misc Questions

83 300D turbo Sedan 171000.
On E-bay I see a lot of CDs for this car, is one of them a parts list, i.e. has all the parts ID'd with a 123 *** *** type part number? I need part numbers to order from this site's FASTLANE thing.
Second question involves starting in the cold. Does leaving the key on after the GLOW light goes out have any benefit in getting the glow plugs hotter? Should one turn off the key then back on to let it go through the glow sequence again? My car has no heater and will be sitting outside. It was a little hard getting it going this morning. I start it and let it warm up for 5~10 mins before driving off. I found that a diesel really doesn't like being driven cold.

Thanks.

Yes, waiting a few seconds before starting will let the glow plugs get hotter. This will let the engine start a little easier when cold.

From what I have read... in the factory shop manual I think .... the plugs continue to heat for close to a minute.. so much better to leave on than cycle again..
I don't know about the CD.. but on paper I think the smaller black book identifies all the pieces which make up a MB.. however , I don't know if they do it by " parts numbers".... many manufacturers update and generally mess with parts numbers over the years... so even if the black books started out with the correct ones it might not help..
Your vin number and calling your local MB dealer will probably get you the correct parts number...
It is also good to have Performance Products catalog because it has some great expanded line drawings and names which help ordering from where-ever....

I have one of those little black books and it does not have the part numbers just exploded. ( thats an ugly thought) views of engines and chassis. It hasn't proven very helpful. I think maybe the best way to find parts #s with the latest micro fetch ( sp?). like Leathermang said Performance's free catalog is great. It is usually all I need to just check something out quick without taking all day. With the black book you can compare different years and for sure, I have used it a couple times when more details were needed

I have only started to use the Black book that came with my car, so far I have used the diagrams to figure how things are put together. In the future I will use them for reference when ordering parts, which are not diagramed in the Performance Products catalog.

In a few weeks I am going to use the seat diagram to find the vaccum fittings for the seat lock.
