Cool Temperature monitoring network in my 300D

I have designed and constructed a temperature monitoring system for my 1985 300D turbo. It uses a Dallas Semiconductor 1-wire network. and 4 DS18B20's digital temperature sensors. There are 2 sensors mounted under the hood. One measures the coolant temperature at the inlet to the radiator, the other is mounted to one of the cooling refrigerated lines to keep a check on the AC. I also have an outside air temperature sensor and an inside air temperature sensor. T he inside sensor is located inside that foam tube where the ACC temperature sensor lives. The DS 18B20's all talk to a Basic stamp BS2-P single chip computer. It drives an 4 line by 20 character line LCD display. The basic stamp is mounted inside the unused ashtray, power is picked up from the connections for the lighter. The LCD display is mounted on the front of the ashtray. If your interested I can send you a couple of PIX . The system has been in use for about 5 months. I built it to try and figure out if the temp sensor on the dash was lying to me or the car actually runs hot. The car seems to run 20 C ( 95 to 100 c) hotter than it should. I have flushed the system, checked for leaks, replaced the radiator cap, changed the thermostat and engine block temp sensor. I belive I probably have a partially clogged 20 year old radiator. Warmer weather will help sort this out.
I posted a message on another reflector site about this thing and I have had 6 requests in 2 hours about it. I plan to post information and pictures of to the other site. Is there interest from any of the Mercedesshop.com group in receiving the information and pictures. ?
I also have a GPS based speedometer using the same stamp technology. The speedo reads speed in MPH with 0.1 Mph resoultion and current heading. When you sit stopped for > 45 seconds it switches to a digital clock until you start to move again.
Thanks
Russ

Sounds pretty cool. I don't think I would ever do something like that but I'm sure there are a few people on here that might. How much did it cost you to set it up?

These types of projects are neat. I would love to learn about how it works & what it costs?

Wow, thats really impressive!! Most of us would have simply replaced the radiator and thermostat....... Dunno what you do for a living but it sounds like you work for either NASA or DARPA. Sounds like you have the most technologically advanced 123 in the world. RT

I would LOVE to have a detailed schematic and parts list for the Temperature network. I wouldn't be so interested in coolant temp, etc, but outside air temp, intake temp, and cabin temp would be absolutely awesome! Maybe mount it in the area that the outside air display was in later 126 & 124 cars.

I await pics and instructions.

I second that!!! Sweet!

I am considering building a full touch screen PC-system into my car though at some point to handle GPS, radio/music/(movies when parked etc)...and so on...and just for the "wow" factor, maybe I could even digitize the windows with relays and stuff, press "half front" on the screen and both front windows go down half way or something...... With an actual pc temperature sensors would be a piece of cake, you could just use normal USB or serial temp sensors and have it display along the top of the screen. Wow...I am drooling at doing something like this..... The best kind of screen is the ones that fit in a very narrow slat, about 2cm thick, then when turned on the screen comes out, and flips up....so its hidden when off and you can keep the dash almost completely stock looking......if I find a good enough job this summer and have some extra $$ I might look into something like that.....

I've been dabbling in Visual Basic and could probably (with lots of work) make programs to control outputs like window relays and stuff...maybe even a link to the climate control....that'd be crazy.

Oh yeah? I have a cassette adaptor for my MP3 CD Player. In fact, I'm burning a CD for it as I type right now.

Have seen the web page with the pix and a basic schematic ? if not here it is

http://www.beescollc.com/MBENZ/MBSENSOR.htm

If you want to build one I will share the basic stamp code. It is designed to desplay 4 sets of temperatures. The limitation is the LCD size

This is my current dash situation...

Its not super beautiful but it accomplishes what I wanted.

My soundsystem headunit is folded up in that picture, it flips that cover over in a 180 degree turn to show the panel/display when you turn the car/ignition on.

I too want to have the layout/specs/part-list for the GPS speedo.

This interests me.
