Does you OM606 knock when cold?
I can understand in the initial startup and moments after when starting up my '97 E300 to hear injector knock. But mine lasts for a while, until it throughly wamrs up it will knock at certain RPM's. I have been using the Stanadyne All Season formula for the past few tanks. Would a higher dosage help alleviate this problem or have no affect? Currently I add in 1/4 of the bottle when I fill up fully from nearly empty. Would increasing my dosage to half the bottle for my next top off help or add and create other problems? This it the blue bottle ofcourse. Any suggestions guys?

I had a 606 for a few weeks. At first it was "noisy" on startup. Then I switched over to synthetic oil and it was "quieter".

I've been runnning the Mobil Delvac oil in it since I've got it.

There are two kinds of Delvac. In the U.S. the silver jug is synthetic and the black jug is mineral. In Canada, that's different. If yours is really noisy and you're feeding it black jug Delvac then I'd suggest trying the silver jug. I believe mine had black jug and was less noisy when I used silver jug. However, it still made some diesel noise in the morning.
Diesels are supposed to make some noise. A quiet diesel may have worn injectors, low compression, etc, etc. When I changed the injectors on my old 603 with 278,000 its now noisier in the morning - the injectors are giving the correct spray pattern....

Thanks for the responses! I do indeed use the synthetic Delvac, in the silver jug :-)

chris call it Delvac 1 and people will know what you're talking about =]
I have a very slight bit of knocking when first started cold, but it goes away after about 20 seconds of running. My car knocked entirely more loudly and more often though before I had my injectors replaced. You may have one or more bad injectors, but its hard to say.

If I switch to an OM606 powered MB Diesel, I'd never detect these noise related problems until they became really really bad
![]() BTW, I just switched to Delvac One on my OM617. I honestly don't know what improvements I should be looking for. It runs just the same. Maybe less "numb" when it's cold that's all. (Previously my car was VERY VERY slow when it's cold)

I know my 1998 E300D TurboDiesel made quite a bit of knocking when my fuel recirculation lines that jump from one injector to the next, then back to the filter body, were leaking. It would actually get worse as the car idled and warmed up. After cleaning the mess up, which was a pretty good mess as the injectors are in a vertical orientation, and centered in the head over each piston (or seem to be, they could actually be off center but that is not visually apparent from the outside) in deep wells that filled with fuel first, then overflowed and leaked out both sides of the cover, and on the exhaust manifold. The leak became very apparent at that point. But I did note the car idled louder, and even smoked a little when it was in this condition. Once repaired (a much more difficult job on this model than the W123 units with the injector body upper half exposed) the idle noise and smoking went away. Good luck and I hope this helps. Jim edit: I get next to no oil consumption between Delvac 1 changes every 6,000 miles. I have now driven the car about 21,000 miles or so and I have never seen the add oil light come on. My first oil change was after 3,000 miles and I put Mobil 1, 0W-40 in it. I used this once more, after another 3,000 miles and switched to Delvac 1 (5W-40), with a 3,000 mile change, followed by an extension to 6,000 miles for the next two. The third 6,000 mile event will come in April or so. Jim

My OM606 doesn't consume any oil to speak of. I change it twice as often as the FSS requests, so about every 7K miles. It's not down appreciably at that time - no more than a half quart or so. I've never added oil between changes. Actually, right now its oil consumption is exactly zero, seeing as it's sitting at the shop with the head removed to extract a wayward glow plug...
Like any other diesel, the 606 knocks more when cold. It's so quiet when warmed up that I think it's especially shocking to hear it make noise on a cold morning. Mine just makes a soft clitter-clatter when warm - barely identifiable as a diesel. JimSmith - Wow, what a mess! - JimY |

Check your glow plugs. My 1999 E300TD was very quiet on cold starts for the first 3 years, then one morning a month ago I got a bit more clatter and some minor shaking and smoke until the engine was warm a few minutes later. Had all glow plugs replaced under warranty. Problem gone.

I had added half a bottle of the Stanadyne All-Season additive right before my fill up and topped her off. The next morning she was alreayd noticeably quieter. Like night and day difference, and it was only 5 miles from tank to my house. Even though it has been warm here.... hmmm.... keepin' my eyes anf ears peeled.

Time to fish out an old thread!
My car has a slight idle knock when cold after the glow plugs stop glowing (about a minute or two after a cold start) and I believe that's pretty common and I've seen that on other OM606 cars. What concerns me more is some major nailing that I have if I accelerate past 3000 RPM and ease on the throttle when the engine is still cold. Does anyone else get that? Once it warms up it's quiet at all RPM's. I suspect there may be some carbon buildup in the prechambers or I have low compression in some cylinders, but the engine certainly doesn't behave like a worn-out one. It's smooth and has plenty of power (for a NA OM606 that is). I have checked all my injectors for spray pattern, I have no fuel leaks, have tried many injector cleaners, and all other maintenance is up to date.

It sounds pretty normal to me. I get the same slightly louder diesel noise when the engine is cold a couple minutes after first start- (after the glow plugs go off). I don't really notice it much with the windows closed, but it is more noticeable with the windows open.
I also get the nailing when cold upon release of the accelerator (ie when coasting) at low speed. Nothing to worry about. It all goes away after engine is warm. J.G. |
