87 300D Turbo A/C ?'s
I recently looked at a 87 300 D turbo with some A/C problems. The A/C system has had all new hoses, but loses freon so the owner thinks the compressor is leaking.
My question is about the function of the blower fan should it come on when the fan buttons are activated even with no freon. The owner says the fan comes on sometimes. Would this be a problem with the pushbutton unit or the fan itself? Any suggestions appreciated? |

The freon leak might be the evaporator. not a pretty job... the dash has to come out.
have that checked or budget some $2500 to have someone do the job.

Yes, the blower should come on regardless of refrigerant charge. The problem could be either the blower or the pushbutton unit. Some more troubleshooting is in order.
Holson's right about the evaporator. That was the straw that broke the camel's back on my long-gone 300E.

Thanks for the info. I'm weighing my options about purchasing the vehicle.
The rest of the car is in pretty good condition, but I don't want to be nickel'd and dime'd on every little thing. |

Unfortunately the A/C on the 124 chasiss is usually no nickel and dime thing. If the A/C compressor is bad then count on a $1,000+ repair bill unless you do it yourself. A new CCU is about $200 (rebuilt) and the evaporator is as described above. Be sure to factor that into your price.
