Anyone recognize these parts
These parts are left over from the reassembly of my "80" 616 engine. I remember them when removing the things around the pan area but it was a year ago and I cant figure where they were.

Look like clamps to hold down the battery.

I thought all mechanical jobs were supposed to produce ' spare' parts.... Are those the only spares from a job a year ago ? Pretty good....

rmmagow ...No They came from under the engine someplace.
Greg....Ya, I think thats about all the parts I had left over but I gota admit I had a parts engine that I robbed from when a bolt or something disappeared. I tried to be careful, putting parts in Zip locks but after a year........Those little gizmos don't look familiar, huh? Well I have about 1200 miles on it and the pan hasent fallen off yet. Steve |

Those gizmos sorta-kinda look like the transmission pan bolts should go through them to spread out the clamping load when you tighten the pan bolts.

Humm .."Those gizmos sorta-kinda look like the transmission pan bolts should go through them to spread out the clamping load when you tighten the pan bolts"
They defiantly look like there designed to spread out a load on something but the hole in them is threaded and I had put the bolts back in them which are not very long. I would say only about 4 or 5 mm of threads protrude. Are you saying there are smeller looking things on the auto trannys? There is of course no pan on my 4 spd box. I carry one around in each of my cars in case I run into someone that might have seen the critters before.

First I thought that you had really big hands, but then, I realized that they are too big to be those tranny pan thingusses. The auto tranny pan dealybobs are thinner and aren't threaded.
I'll keep guessing.

greetings, I recently ran into these parts when I was doing a little drive shaft work. In my car, 123 300d, the long threaded bars slide up in the chassis for the drive shaft bearing mount.
The bolts look about as short as mine, bolt through the bearing holder, looks like a pillow block, and hold the drive shaft bearing up into the driveshaft tunnel. I haven't run into anything similar anywhere else. My description may sound convoluted but without looking at a repair manual for the proper terms Its the best I can do. besides it was a PITA holding the shaft and bearing in place while I threaded in those short bolts. The threaded bars kind of float around until they are captured by the bolts at just the right angle. hope this helps. cheers, mark |

Eureka! - I think mk nailed it. Now I remember, you are holding the "bolt" holes for the driveshaft center bearing support. If you remove those bolts you can actually slide that piece out of it's housing underneath the car. Look underneath the car and make sure this part is supporting your drive shaft. If they are then you are probably holding the ones from the spare. I suspect they built it like this to allow a little alignment adjustment in fastening the carrier bearing and to allow ease of replacement if you ever strip the threads out.

Correct!!
I think the bolts used on my cars for the center support are longer but the metal tabs are definitely the part that mk240d
and engatwork have identified. Jeeze, I shoud have spotted them right off the bat!! I had the driveshaft out of Marlene a couple of weeks ago and remember dealing with them then...but mine stayed in the chassis (you could have taken them out). I don't see what would be gained by taking them out (except for creating some entertainment for a bunch of us wannabe Benzo mechanix). Congratz!!

Hoo Ray
I will crawl under my "85" and see if I can see them then I will know where they go on the wifes "79" (from whenst they came) MK.. Thanks a zillion.... and engatwork..So these could be spares then? That would explain the shortness of the bolts and they could have come from under the engine where they are kept. I will get back...This forum is truly awesome.

I second that....
it does go on a some type of oil pan, I would also say transmission pan

While under my "79" changing oil and checking things out, I SAW those gizmos right there where mk said they would be. Since the engine that I rebuilt came out of my "80" parts car its possible they came from it when I pulled the engine. Anyway its still a mystery as I am almost sure they were down around the underside of the engine. The chassis manual does not show them at all. (at least I couldn't find anything) Thanks all, most of the mystery has been solved and I am not as worried about "left over parts" ...
