44mm socket?

Where can I find a 44mm socket to remove the sending unit from the fuel tank? Thanks, Ken

I think most have used an adjustable wrench or made a wrench that would fit. A socket like that probably won't be cheap, might try snap-on or other tool suppliers if you want the socket though.

44mm = 1.732"

Use a 1 3/4" socket...you can get them at Sears.

I have a 1 3/4" 12 point socket. Is yours a 6 point socket? It seemd to be just big enough to slip. If it worked for you I will try again may be I am not getting it all the way down on the sender. Its a tight fit. Thank You, Ken

I aplogize. I didn't mean to imply that I'd tried it....just seemed that from the mm-to-in conversion, it seemed as if it should work.

Harbor Fright Tools has a big metric socket set but it doesn't include a 44mm: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=5494

Maybe the 45mm will do the trick?

got mine out

got mine out on the wagon with a big pair of channel locks. Yes, it's not an elegant solution, but worked fine and left no marks.

Sure am glad my fuel tank project is over and done with ! I'd be willing to bet a sizeable amount of cold beer that I have the cleanest fuel tank around. You'd be amazed just how bad a diesel tank can be without clogging the filters. The crud just stays stuck to the sides.

Also, I got the drain pulg out with some tool supposedly used for pulling apart shower faucets. "Rented" it from the Home Depot. ;-)

The correct size is 46mm which corespodent to 1-7/8". Same size
is for Fuel Tank Screen. I loosen Fuel Gauge Sending unit with pliers, but for Fuel Tank Screen I bought 1-7/8" at Sears.

My father has a set of plus sized sockets made from bent up tube stock.

I dont know who makes them or sells them, but they are basically 26mm and up sizes made of thin tubing pressed into a 6 point socket shape. Instead of using a socket wrench, you insert a screw driver or metal rod through two holes on the top portion of the socket. They work pretty well for big bolts and nuts.

Anyway, the sockets cost about a buck each, supposedly.

eBay

I scored the correct single socket in "mm" on eBay for a decent price....

it was a little tight (making contact on one side), but it worked fine (didn't "jack" anything up in the process)...

My fuel sender was tremendously tight, but an 1-7/8" socket got it out okay. Needed a breaker bar to get it loose, though. Channel locks wouldn't even touch it without chipping away the nut.
