Question Brass washer for oil filter housing 87 300td??

Does the long bolt that holds the oil filter to the filter cap (middle bolt) use a washer between the filter housing cap and bolt?

My oil filter came with 2 brass(?) washers, one for the drain plug and one for what?? It's too small for the middle bolt. 1987 300td wagon, btw.

Yes, the long middle bolt does have one. I often have the same problem of an odd-sized washer in the filter kit.

The filter is also used in other applications with a different sized center bolt (or none, as the W126 with 603 doesn't use one) or different oil drain plug size. Cheaper to put them both in than to stock and sell two different filters.

you will have to buy the two rubber o-rings for the center bolt separately, change them every other oil change.

THe old oil pan bolt for the 601's used the smaller one.

After a tow rod fell off a city of chicago tow truck and took out my oil pan (i turned the car off immediately and no dmage occurred -- it was about 9 years ago), I put on a new 601 oil pan. THe drain plug for the new oil pan uses the larger washer.

On the 601's (at least the early ones) the oil filter stem is one piece with the cover.

I've seen many 87 OM603's with no copper seal ring used on the oil filter center shaft. Both my cars don't have one and I've never added one. No leak either. I use the large new copper seal on the drain plug. IMO, it's optional.
