Pass window, down only?

My 85 300SD front pass window only goes down, NOT up. What gives, is it the cold? Is it the contact on the window switch on the console? Is the regulator ok if it operates in one direction? Just another thing to mess with in the cold, thanks for your comments.

I've messed with my switches and motors quite a bit. I still have a problem with the RR switch. But, the issue is either the motor or the switch. My bet is that it is the switch because the motors seldom go bad. You can confirm this by removing the switch and applying power directly to the motor contact terminals. The motor contact terminals are terminals 1 and 2. You can obtain power and ground from terminal number three (12V) and terminal number four (ground). The window will go up when terminal 1 has 12V and terminal 2 has ground and the window will go down when terminal 1 had ground and terminal 2 has 12V.

All of the above information has been confirmed on the RR window. I assume that the RF window will have the same terminal patterns. The Germans typically find a pattern and stick with it.

Take the switch out, take it apart and clean the junk out of it, and that may do it. Don't lose any of the little parts.

Try and press the down button than instantly flick it the opposite way so the up direction is depressed. I used to have that problem, but flicking it like that always seemed to work. Now it has magically fixed itself!

Should I squirt some WD-40 into the switch or NOT?

No, Edge, no WD-40 in the switches. You can carefully take the switch apart and clean it, or you can replace it, but WD-40 will only create more problems. I still suggest the test as I mentioned above to rule out the motor.

Edge:

I just had this same stinkin problem. Almost froze to death getting home.

Great advice on the forum in this order:

1. Try the switch first. This can be done in one of two ways:

a. Pop the panel off the door and put your voltmeter on the two bolts where the wires attach to the window motor. With your key on, see if the up switch sends power and then try the down switch. On my car, only the down switch supplied power (indicated by the volt meter). This pointed right away to a problem with the switch.

b. Just swap out another switch on the console. This one is actually easier as you don't need to pop off the door cover.

2. If its the motor, search..... (i found tons of stuff but don't remember it cuz my problem was easy)

fixed!

I was just about to settle in for an hour's work when I jammed a small screwdriver in to pry out the switch. I missed the first time but by chance, I turned the key on and the window worked! Must be something in the contacts but that's for another day. Thanks, guys.

I know on my 1979 300CD, when I have had problems with the windows, I always check the relays that are sitting on the drivers side wheel well. I ussally pull them out, clean them off, put them back in and the windows tend to work just fine... except for the rear windows, but that's an issue due to it being a coupe

I want to add to check fuses because they can look good and not make good contact all the time .
I cannot believe that I have had some items not working all the time and 90 % of the time It was the fuse or the fuse holder .

Clean fuse holder and put in new fuses.
I did replace the window switches at first and found they worked for a while and then had a problem and went back to the fuse etc.
Anyhow the new window switches looked nice because the little white decals that are on them were worn and 21 years old . My 2 cents
