1st Mercedes purchase

Here's the scoop, my bother works at a Ford Dealership, and someone is trading in a 1976 240D. The Dealership is giving the guy $300 for the trade in and I can buy it for $100 over that since my Brother works there.

I have seen polaroids of this car and it looks very nice. Although there were no pics of the interior, if it is on par with the exterior it should look nice also. I was told that all it needs a starter solenoid. I was also told that the guy bought it two years ago for $2000.

I kind of thought that for $400 I don't have anything to loose. I have just heard that the 240D is greatly underpowered. Should I avoid this model completely and wait for a 300D or snatch it up for that price?

Please give me your opinions on the 240D and what I should look out for. I have never owned a Mercedes before so I am a complete NOOB!

Please emerse me in Mercedes knowledge, any and all opinions on this car is accepted.

Thanks in advance.
