Ricky,

Looking good, what is the status at this moment? Are you ready to drive again?

Any luck with receiving the center caps?

greetingz,

Steve,

They finished painting today. They're putting her back together again and will take another 24 hours for interior and exterior detailing...making sure everything's perfect. Then she's mine again!!!

I'll post pics in 48 hours max.

Center caps aren't here yet. I'm still waiting for stuff sent from the UK (Fire & Ice brochure) and Germany (Euro motor and body microfiche including AMG versions) a week before you sent the caps. With the local post here...patience is must! I'm looking forward to getting them though...

Cheers!

Hey Ricky- re: your painting

Did your painter use OEM Glasurit? Did they primer in white? How many stages/ coats of paint applied? UV baking? Did they have to wet sand to apply the clear over the rest of the car?

Did you duplicate OEM MB paint and prep process? Any fading from the rest of the paint job to blend?

I believe some sort of DuPont paint was used as he uses that exclusively. Primer used was off white. Hood came with black primer. Not sure how many coats of paint used on hood and trunk. Car was in the oven after painting. Whole car was wet sanded prior to applying clear coat (i.e. original clearcoat was removed).

Not sure what you mean by MB paint and prep process. You don't mean factory do you? Didn't have the car dipped if that what you're asking. Had that done to an SLC once though.

Paint was matched using some sort of a paint scanner from adjacent painted parts. Unsure if paint was scanned prior to removing clear coat or not, come to think of it... If the paint was faded at all, it sure didn't seem like it as the color was even all throughout prior to painting. The clearcoat though needed some work if one were anal enough to go through the whole car with a fine tooth comb (I was )

I'll take pics tomorrow when I pick up the car and will post pics then. Maybe I'll give it a week or three and give it the ol' Zaino treatment...

Aaargh! So am I!!!

The whole process was supposed to take 2 weeks...it's a little short of a month now. Some screw up in parts ordering...

I'm sure it'll take a couple more days to get everything *just right* You know...fixing those itty bitty things (a little overspray here, a miniscule ding there...)

FAD,

I'm afraid the bubble wrap might scratch the paint!

Seriously though, I was thinking of getting one of those plastic car covers, you know, the ones with the fans and you just drive the car in it and zip it up?

oh yes- I have seen those space age air bubble car cover/ portable environment things....- now that's befitting your 500e!

if you do pick one up, let us know how you like it- I've not heard anything on the grapevine (+/-) on this product

A friend has one for his Ducati. It allows you to store your vehicle without risk of developing mildew.

This means you can leave your car for months on end, with the windows open a bit more than a crack and for the cost of keeping a tiny lightbulb running, you get back to a car the way you left it!

The only problem is that it's such a chore having wait for the thing to expand and then having to zip the thing up.

On second though, it might be better suited for, say, a fully restored 1957 300SL Roadster that won't be seeing frequent use.

We're almost there!!!

Here are some pics I took today.

The hood and trunk have been painted to match the rest of the body. The whole car was given a fresh layer or two or three of clearcoat.

Here's the front of the car. The headlights aren't on yet as they're being extra careful installing the xenon lights. Getting the light aimed correctly is what's taking long.

Here's a pic the rear. I forgot to order the chrome strip in the back (doh!) so I still have to look around for one.

The good news is that the paint's perfectly matched and the car's shining like I've never seen it before, all the dings and tiny scratches are gone...and I get to take her home tomorrow afternoon! I also get to play around with Satish's first gear start for the first time!!!

Cheers!

p.s. Fad, you think cling wrap would do the trick? (taking off from your bubble wrap idea...)

Ricky- - thanks for sharing the pics and congrats, it totally looks like you have an as-new 500e to play with!

I'm thinking the cling wrap would offer less protection than the 2-3-4 coats of the clear coats that were applied, so a nice cool garage would protect her nicely

Are you planning on taking her out of service for the winter (rainy season)?

have a great day, and congrats again on your as-new and improved 500e; let us know your thoughts re: Satish's 1st gear start too!

Ricky,

Don't forget-paint takes a solid 90 days to cure completely, and is off-gassing for that entire time. Wax it and you'll cloud the paint.

BTW, do they require a front plate where you are? Otherwise, you can get a filler paanel for the front that matches the impact strip.

The car looks great!!

fad,

Thanks for the compliments! I enrolled her on a maintenance program for the paintwork (weekly washes, waxing every so often and detailing once a quarter etc.) plus the guarantee on the paint for as long as I own the car (more like for as long as the shop is in business) should allow me to take the car out as often as I please . She's garaged when she's not in use though. The only time she gets sun is when she's moving.

I'll sure post my impressions as soon as I get to test the mod. Believe me, nobody's more eager to test it than I am!!!

Michael,

Thanks!

You mean no waxing for 3 months??? I was looking forward to several coats of Zaino to get her real shiny!

Unfortunately front plates are required here...but on the other hand, nothing here really is 'illegal' hehehe!
