What colors were available for 88 560SL?
I have the opportunity to purchase a one-owner 560SL with 65k miles on it from a friend of my father's. I plan to re-sell the car.
It's a one-owner vehicle, but the owner describes the paint as a "robin's egg blue" which I don't believe was offered during that time. I'm thinking that he may have it confused with "Diamond Blue Metallic" (which is an attractive color). Does anyone have a resource they can point me to that would show me the colors available on an SL during 1988? The owner is planning on either trading it in at the Naples, FL dealership (since it is now in Florida) or bringing it back here to Cincinnati (where the hardtop is stored). I've been researching trade-in values to try to give him a fair price (especially if he has to bring it up here). I find that trade-in values for these cars are in the 10-12k range, while the sites list private sale around 16-17k. Any other SL pricing sites that I am missing out on? One other thing, I won't have the car until around Thanksgiving so will have to sit on it until springtime as nobody buys an SL here during the snowy season. I'm thinking of offering hime 10k delivered to Cincy take it or leave it. I will have the cash tied up for 4-5 months and am sure that the car will require a few hundred bucks to bring to service completely up to date and I figure that the car could probably stand a new set of tires (could be wrong on that). Whay say you on the matter? Thanks! |

I have an '88
I have an '88 in diamond blue (I agree, love the color). I'm pretty sure robin's egg blue was not available. The other blue was midnight blue, but robin's egg blue would be much closer to the diamond blue. If the owner has the original books, the color code is listed on the last page. I can check what mine is when I get home.
Also, if you're planning to buy it, definitely have it inspected by a good independent mercedes mechanic. I probably put 5k into mine after buying it. If you get it for 10k, that's a good price for one with low miles assuming no major damage or problems. They are a blast to drive! David |

I know all about getting a PPO, I was planning on taking the car to Aaron's shop, he knows his way around a 107 (shameless plug)!.
Thanks for the confirmation on the colors. I didn't think there were but two or three shades of blue available during that time frame: diamond blue metallic, nautical blue, and midnight blue. I just _knew_ that the light blue (non-metallic) was discontinued in the early 80s or thereabout. That was one fugly color IMNHO, although it does kinda look cool on an early W116 with the painted hubcaps. Thanks! |

Chris, a word of warning: Do not buy this car. You will not be able to sell it. Not because not one will want it (they will!), but because you won't be able to bring yourself to give it up. They are way to much fun. Especially on a nice sunny Sunday like we had in Cincy today!

I've got the full 1989 brochure set, including the color chart; the blues available were 355-diamond blue and 929-nautical blue in the metallics, and 900-deep blue and 904-midnight blue in the standard paints. AFAIK there was no change from 1988.
