At what mileage on one of these engines should someone start thinking about timing chain replacement??
I'm at 92k, so probably have a while, but it's never to soon to add something to the To-Do list.... After the A/C.... and after the window motor.... :-( Thanks!

Wow, what happened to your crank shaft? I have never heard of one of those failing on a 104. There is a page you will find if you do a search on the 104 head gasket that shows you how to remove the head and get started. If you have to remove your crank shaft and not your camshaft, I would suggest you remove the entire engine so you can mic it and do it right. Good luck!

On my 300Sl it only sounded like the timing chain was bad (90K miles at the time). It turned out to be the hydraulic tensioner. Only cost $250 bucks to repair at the dealership. The mechanic checked the chain itself and pronouced it in excellent condition with no appreciable stretch. Adsit sells short blocks and most other engine components.

$250 ?!!!
Tecqboy -
You must be going to a mythical "honest dealership". The tensioner is a $60 part at a parts store (= $150 + at the dealer). Toss in some genuine "MB Dealer Labor" and I believe you came away from that one relatively unscathed. I think roger 129 has left out a lot of infomation or is confused about which "shaft" needs replacing - I've not heard of a thrown or jumped chain ruining the crank. But then again, I get surprised by my ignorance everyday... Kevin
