New 450SL Owner question on oil pressure gauge
I just recently bought a 1979 450SL which I am totally in love with. I have done minor repairs on my Aerostar van (starters, alternators, power steering pump, radiators, etc.) so I am pretty sure I can work on this vehicle myself.
The oil pressure gauge does not work at present. The previous owner said there was a leak at the instrument cluster, so he took it in and the MB mechanic just capped off the hose, instead of fixing the leak. I would like very much to have this working. So my question is, do I have to pull the whole dash out to get to the connection or just the instrument cluster? Any help would be appreciated. |

oil gauge fix
The steering wheel needs to be removed and then the instrument cluster can be pulled on - pressure fit - need to disconnect oil gauge, speedo etc to have complete access - good time to replace bulbs and maybe get instruments refurbished. Good luck. There are a number of good manuals: Chiltons, Haynes and MB Chassis & Body manuals plus MB Service manual for V-8 engines: M116 & M117 (I got my MB manuals on eBay).

re: Oil Gauge Fix
Thanks for the input. I got my Haynes Manual today, and I must say it certainly enhances the MB Service Manuals. I will be working on this tomorrow morning, and hope that I can get it done in a day....

Oil Gauge Fix
Well, in perusing all the manuals I have (both MB and Haynes) I can't for the life of me figure out where the line from the gauge to the engine goes. Is there a diagram in the MB manuals that shows this line? I really don't want to start pulling the car apart until I figure out where the line is and where the mechanic actually capped off the line.
