I'm not entirely sure that the incorrect cam shaft would give you excess wear over the right one. If the cam fit the bearings and followers it shouldn't wear any faster than the right one, would it? I has all the markings of a bad part but that might be hard to prove at this point. Most parts have a 90 day warranty but some are longer. MB parts might be a year but that's something you would have to inquire about.

If you could see the difference in the cut/location of the lobes you could easily believe it would cause the problem. Wish I'd had my camera, but I didn't.
Keep in mind this was the second camshaft and rocker arms on the passenger side that had been eaten up. Also, the cams and rocker arms were the only variables. I don't understand the physics of the problem, but there is no denying the improvement in the way it runs vs before. Don

Is it possible that the cams that failed were for the older engines with mechanical lifters?
There is a difference in lob shape between mechanical and hydro lifter cams.

You know, I was thinking about this too. Even if the cams were entirely wrong and mismatched for this car, if the compensators were hydraulic and the cam was a hydraulic grind, installed properly, the cams should have been undamaged regardless of how the engine actually ran.

When I pulled that last camshaft off and laid it on the bench, it matched perfectly to a 380SL camshaft out of another engine. So I don't think it's a matter of hydraulic vs solid lifters. Seems to me that if the lobe is not hitting the rocker arm as designed that it's going to create a problem, and in this case it wasn't meshing properly.
As stated previously, I don't understand all the physics, but I see clearly what the effect of mismatched camshafts was--and it's not prett. Don
