Zinc motor oil additve for 113 engines

I ran across an adv for a zinc additive for older engines. DPZ, I think.
Is there any reason to use that in my 67 250 sl ?
You read about lower zinc levels in todays motor oils to reduce emissions.
Can it help? Does it hurt?
What's your thought?

Depends on the weight of oil that you choose. The classic 20w50 blends usually have enough zinc whereas the lighter weight oils such as 5w30 does not because it's designed for the more modern car and from what I've read, the zinc can damage cats.

If you feel that an additive will give you more security, by all means use it, it certainly wont hurt anything.

Thanks for comments.
I just had an oil change last week with 10W-40.
I had run only 600 miles since last change a year ago. That's how many miles per year I average with my 250 sl. I wish I did more.
I have the zinc additive so I will throw in.
...can't hurt.

At 600 miles per year your main problem will be corrosion, not wear. Use Rotella T, change it yearly and forget about the additives.

Mercedes has struck a deal with Shell so that if you buy MB branded oil...it is repackaged Shell.

I bring this up because I buy my oil and filter at my local dealer. Prices are competitive and I am usually in there for some part or other, anyways.

Oil of choice for my M110 used to be Mobil Delvac 1300 15W40.

Since the switch to Shell they now provide Shell Rotella T 15W40.

Either one will give you the Zinc that you need.

I would think twice about adding an additive. Most oils are balanced pretty well so that the various additives play well together but there are instances where you can have some not interact well and end up precipitating. Not good for obvious reasons. There are several really good oils rich in the anti-wear additive ZDP or ZDDP. Look at the Joe Gibbs Driven products, Swepco, Valvoline VR1 to name a few. They have been developed with additional protection in mind.
