Hello All,
Any comments on this tire? (235/45-17)

Are these tires uni-directional?

Car: 1983 MB 500SEC

Thanks!
Neil

I have Pirellis on the 16 inch rims for my 1990 300SL-24 (225/55-16) and I do NOT like them.
I don't know what type they are (never cared enough to have a close look), but they tend to make noise when braking after high speed rides. The tires wear too fast, but stick to the road fairly good.

greetingz,

Noisy and quick wearing you'll find is the general consensus on these!

P6000 vs. P6000 Sport Veloce . . .

Well, I recall seeing a lot of different opinions on these. For that matter tirerack's test seem pretty positive. It appears that there is a distinction to be made between the plain P6000 and the P6000 Sport Veloce.
I would like to hear more b/c I would be interested in the 235/50/16 size.
Maybe tirerack can clarify - the test in 225/50/16 appeared to indicate that the tire size may affect the quality of the tire.

Well If you are upgrading from the 215/55/16 to the 235/50/16, then I might consider the Pirelli P6000 Sport Veloces. Otherwise stay clear as there are many other options available in other size categories that are far better. Even a nicer 215/55/16 tire would perform as well as the 235/50/16. First of all, they wore very quick, stink in snowy conditions, wet traction was decent, but still hydroplaned a little, and for that price, I could have found something better. Post what size you are interested in, and we'll give you a recommnedation.

Chiragp:

I'm interested in 235/45 17"

I'm replacing some Bridgestone Potenzas(?). I didn't like the ride. I only use this car in the summer, and only for 3K miles or so. I do take the wheels off the car for the winter storage.

So, any recommendations?

TIA,
Neil.

First thing to note is that many of the tires in the tire industry have updated models that replace their older siblings, some of the new Bridestones are much different then the older ones.

Also what type of driving do you do. Mainly highway touring, or High-Performance handling and wet/dry traction.

My recommendations:
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/yokohama/yo_avidh4.jsp

$111 (TireRack) If you want a highway touring tire, the Yokohama AVid H4s for you. They offer decent handling, and a smooth ride, come with a 45,000 miles warranty and ar H-rated (130 mph.)

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/bfg/bfg_gforce_kdws.jsp

$119 (TireRack) The BFGoodrich g-force T/A KDWS offers high-performance, great wet traction (an "AA" rating, and 400 UTOG treadwear) as well as a nice ride (from other's opinions.) And still handles All-Season capabilities if need be (wouldn't count on the all-season traction too much, less then 1" of snow is what all-season means in this category.)

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/bridgestone/bs_re730.jsp

$139 (TireRack) The Bridgestone Potenza RE730 are a new Ultra-High Performance Tire that has great wet traction (AA rating again) and offer a UTOG Treadwear of about 300 (pretty high for a performance tire.) These are a lil noisey compared to some of the other tires, however porbably not as bad as the old Bridgestone RE71s.

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/dunlop/du_s9000.jsp

$175 (TireRack) The Dunlop SP Sport 9000 are OEM choices on many MBs, and offer incredible wet traction as well as dry performance. Incredibly quiet for a tire in this class and best some other tires overall. Nice ride qualities, and decent wear for a tire in this class.

In my opinion, All-Season tires will always ride nicer then Summer tires. So try the BFGoodrich. They seem to have a nice review. And put the extra $$ in your pocket as well.

Chirag,
WOW, thanks for the thoughtful analysis. You don't know how much I appreciate it!

I mostly just cruise around my little town. Not real aggressive.... Sometimes short trips on the highway.

I'll give Luke a call and see what he thinks.

Have a great day!
Neil.

What I finally bought...

Well, after talking with Luke, I bought a set of 235/45ZR17 Yokohama AVS DB. These tires are SUPER quiet!!!! The ride is much better than the Bridgestones RE71 (?) that I had.

So, in short, Luke really helped me out with a fine selection.

Thanks Luke!
