Removing Key when not in Park

I would rather that our 99 ML430 prohibited the ignition key from being removed when the transmission is not in Park. Something I have gotten used to with other vehicles. I think this is a good safety feature.

Have they incorporated this feature into newer ML's?
Or maybe my ML is faulty and allowing the key to be removed like this?
