Are You Getting Scared?

Let's see. Our National Deficit is at record levels. We seem to have recreated a very messy war situation, like our Vietnam experience. A few days ago, complaints were filed with the FCC because televised spot on an NFL football game showed a woman's BACK, bare to just above the waist. And the FCC is taking it seriously! Time magazine has named Karl Rove as the "Man of the Year." The controling political party changed Congressional rules to keep the Speaker of the House from being suspended for being charged with a crime. Our President is under pressure from his own party to appoint to the Supreme Court only those judges who will abolish some established Constitutional rights. Legislation has already suspended some of those important rights. And a Constitutional ammendment is being heavily promoted to allow a man born in Austria to run for President of our country.

Am I the only one who sees similarities with this and events in Germany in 1935-1936?

Thanks,
Richard

The results of this election has frightened the world. We have endorsed pre-emptive invasion, occupation and the restriction of civil rights based on vague threats, and the concept of war without end. Our media let go unchallenged a rightwing political campaign that claimed voting for the other side would cause a terrorist attack, a tactic no different than those used by the Nazis, and an absolute lowpoint in American electoral history. I see no difference in the tactics used in this election and those used by the Nazis after the Reichstag fire. In addition, the Republicans have set up the modern equivalent of a Ministry of Propaganda in Fox News and AM Radio, which are nothing more than propaganda outlets, where "Jew" has become "Liberal". The Bush family has a long association with the Nazis going back generations. The media never mentions this, either. Since 9-11 everything the Republicans have done is right out of Goebbels "Reichstag Fire" playbook, and the country has bought it hook line and sinker, just like the Germans did. The parallels are becoming too numerous to ignore.

Lots of deluded people here if anyone sees ANY simularities to Nazi Germany.

the Gun laws they enacted taking away peoples weapons are exactly like what the Demorat party has been trying to impose for decades. Thank god for the 2nd amendment.

Urban legend. Guns were already illegal before the Nazis took power, and they passed out guns to the populace all during the war. What the hell did the Nazis have to be afraid of? Their opponents were locked up in camps and the people loved them. Same **** happening here.

A: Can't answer for the rest of the forum like the question asks. For me, at least, yes, you are the only one.
It's 52/48 and trending - Got to remember that Germany had great support in 1935-6 from right here.

Q: Am I getting scared?

A: Yes. Very much so. We have an administration that got elected by barely more than half of the popular vote, who is acting as though they received a supermajority (and have been ever since 2000; I expect it will get worse, though). On top of that, we have a Congress with both houses under the control of the same party that's in the White House. The Supreme Court is currently barely under the control of the same party, but with retirements looming, this hold on the Court will likely get stronger. I'm not sure if all three branches of the federal government have been under the control of one party in the past, but I don't see much in the way of checks and balances. Coupled with the attitude of this administration regarding people who don't agree with them... *shudders*

Q: Are you the only one who sees similarities with these and events in Germany 1935-36?

A: The apparent lack of checks and balances does remind me of this. However, I don't think things have progressed to that point...yet, at least. Doesn't mean it can't happen, though, and that's why I'm so worried.

I concur with this well-reasoned statement. I don't think most mainstream Republicans yet realize just how radical this administration is. Some moderate Republicans in Congress are starting to show signs that they are less enamored of Bush and his crowd.

In any case, with the Democrats weakened and with Republicans controlling all branches of the federal government, I do think it's an unsettling time.

Clinton got far less than Bush got..................total votes.

The simularities are the Democrats actually are the ones who want to take away the rights given us in the original 13 amendments.......not the republicans, you are dilusional if you think otherwise.

Sounds like ole sour grapes Gore who was such a sore looser.

No fear here. I live atop a mountain (OK -- a large hill). If I don't like the look of things, I just don't look toward the bottom. I'll probably take another peak in about 4 years...
