Are meaning to say that your wife bought the car without asking you? I think you ought to go right out and buy yourself another real nice MB diesel without asking her.

Actually it was her turn. The last new car was my Mercedes, and in between a couple of kids and houses. And I was the one to tell her to buy a car cause her old one was terminal (like she knows what a rear main seal is or what's involved in changing it.) I didn't say much about what she got, I was just glad she made up her mind.
We did get a little lucky, she had been considering an SUV and even giving up having a standard transmission until she found an Explorer with a stick. And then the price of gas shot up

Good thing she bought a 2001.
The 2006 has got to be one of the ugliest cars I've ever seen. As an aside, ALL 2006 Jettas are built, for worlwide consumption, in Mexico. Hmmmmm, same place mine was built. I hope she has better luck with it than I had with my 1997 ( purchased new ). By the way, it IS the Vr 6's that have ( had ) all the coilpack problems ! My 2.0 inline 4 had a conventional distributor ! First thing I noticed when I purchased my M-B, Parts are only averaging 70 - 75 % of what I used to pay for the VW parts.

For a while I was considering a new TDI for my wife but after joining the TDI forum, I read far too much about all the problems they had. I don't think it's reasonable to have as many problems for the amount of money they cost.

My cousins love VW's, they have had a bunch of them. I drove her 04 1.8T Jetta a bit. It only had 1,200 miles on it at the time and was a nice little car. I didn't like the engine though I want low down power the 1.8T you have to rev the piss out of. It had a rattle already to! I thought it was a nice little car, I just wouldn't spend $20k on one.

My friend's GTI 1.8T is pretty cool. The torque curve is pretty straight from low rpm so it actually feels pretty quick. Of course he says it can go from 0-60 in less than 5 seconds but never wants to prove it to me, he just cites a magazine, can't remember which.

manny - Sorry, but you are wrong. The 4 cylinder engines in the Mk iv chassis cars have no distributor. And it was the 4 cylinder cars, the 2.0 and 1.8T, that had all the oil problems. The PASSAT doesn't come with the VR6 and it had the coil pack problem on the 1.8T cars. Also, Audi never used the VR6. Although I received a letter from VW saying they would change my coil pack in the GTI, I have never done so. Your 1997 was a Mk. III; a POS. I have had a Mk. II (1988), Mk. III (1996), and now own two Mk. IVs. The Mk. IV is so different it is hard to believe. I hated my Mk. III even though it was very reliable. As for Mercedes, in 35 years owning 6 M-B myself, with another 6 in my immediate family, they just don't compare for reliability. They are better in a lot of areas, but not reliability.

Poorly built cars, a lot of the jettas are made in mexico. I dont know if its assembly or parts they used, but a lot of failures. I know two people with jettas. One has a 2000 vr6 and the other is a 2002 1.8T.
On the VR6 some of the experienced problems included blown coil packs, broken window regulator and heated seats. On the 1.8T, the turbo actually blew out and had to be replaced. All of course which are covered under warranty, but who wants to be making visits to dealership all the time? Most important part with buying Jettas is having bumper to bumper warranty, cause you'll be taking advantage of it often.
