They USED to be reasonably priced, but that's not so true anymore. With everybody buying up all the old diesels for WVO, biodiesel or whatever, the prices have went WAY up. Seriously, for years, nobody really wanted that BMW, but now they seem to go for a premium... when they can be found.
Well now,that depends.

I almost bought a 524 on ebay with 117,000 miles and full service records,it wound up fetching $3,500.00 or so which is not out of line since the body and interior seemed perfect, and the seller did display recent suspension repair receipts.

Could always grab an old Peugeot Turbo diesel, still many around,VERY durable, fairly easy to obtain parts for and very comfortable seats.

I've had a couple 505s and finding parts seemed to be impossible... well, hard to do. I couldn't find ANYBODY that stocked spares, and no junk yards within 150 miles of me seem to have any. Oh, and the French seem to like rust. What really got me going with the 505 though, is I thought the economy sucked. Not very diesel like, unless they both had problems I was unaware of. They'd do high 20s, but I expected mid 30s or so...

Just about 100%! Cars are listed in the SIG. There is a fun car, a driving car, a utility car, a fun car, and a good MPG car.

You got a point on economy, but I know the U.S. representative of Peugeot[even though not currently imported} and there is a tremendous cadre of enthusiasts who actively support a small but dedicated parts and service industry.

You want a luxurious, economical oddball? how'bout a Citroen turbo diesel wagon?

I'm not familar with the Citroen, seen a few, never owned or even driven one, but I had a Le Car one, lol. Ever try to find a 3 lug rim in the middle of nowhere? That was fun...

With the historic oddballs I like I'm quite familiar with not only chasing down, but actually learning how to fabricate certain parts.

The Le Car,however is a real stretch, had one once and it was fairly reliable but conjured up the disturbing image of a sardine can being pressed between a bench vise.

I was the proud owner of a Renault 5 / Le Car.

If you ever want to see some tire mechanics scatter, just pull into a tire store with a Renault or a Peugeot. Kinda fun to watch...

Notice how much engine is in front of the front axle.

hmm. a 350 would fit in the earlier models with out too much problem.

I bought my first Benz a year ago, an '81 300SD. Great car. Before too long, I want to find a really fine specimen to polish up. The one I've got was definitely a starter/project car -- $1400, rode hard and put away wet, but maybe it actually did have only 171K when I bought it cause the engine and tranny seem strong -- just beat up in other ways.

Don't know much of the history of BMW supposedly being MB's enemy -- not sure if I want to hear it -- sorta like I didn't know my Irish granny (barn in Belfast, she was) was a protestant til a few years ago, didn't really want to know.

I bought my bimmer, an '87 325i a few years back. It had high miles but a highly regular, documented, maintainance history and it ran great. I've done two road trips in it -- Bay Area to Olympia, WA and back -- with riders from the Craigslist rider board and it was some cool driving. I do the all nighter routine. Sorta sleep and drive -- traffic is way light. Coming back a week or two ago, I took the 101, coastal route cuz the lady needed to go to Willits. The road is mostly two lane and twisty. I was gear-banging and apex cutting -- Juan Manuel Fangio, watch out. It's kinda fun turning these kids onto the experience of driving a hot bimmer. My li'l 325i is my poor man's Ferrari.

My gas cost averages around $30 for each leg and it takes around 14 or 15 hours. Air fare's like $150 to $250 and I have to rent a car/ get picked up and borrow my brother in law's gynormous Ford pickup while I'm there.

I'd like to get a diesel that feels as good as this car, someday no doubt. I can appreciate the good German engineering on both cars.

I like my Benzes but I'm not a 100% benz guy...I've got others and will own others in the future.

I have only ever bought Mercedes (they're all listed in my signature below) and for the foreseeable future I can't imagine buy anything else. I do like the idea of a Bentley or Aston Martin sometime in the future, but nothing else really does it for me.

i like them plenty, but far from 100% benz guy. I personally think that the E39 bimmer is one of the most beautiful cars ever produced, much nicer looking than the E-class of the same era(granted, the current e-class whoops the new 5 series in the looks dept) If i had 30k to drop on a used german car it would be a 540i 6spd. However, if i only had 10-15k to drop i'd probably buy a 400E or a really nicely maintained 560SEC(black, of course) When i had my SD, the parts to repair the car just got so darn exepensive, even doign everything myself. Acura parts are much cheaper for some reason. On another note, any of you guys sat in the new RL? man is that ever a beautiful car, acura has come out with some kickass cars lately
