I didn't cook this under the hood, but---

for all you '65 & later Corvair owners, there's a heat outlet at the floor in the back seat that blows really hot- going up a 12,000 foot pass in Colorado, I stuck a can of Chun King chow mein back there at the bottom of the hill. Spun it 180 degrees at 6,000 ft and dinner was piping hot when I got to the top.

We were dumb, thinking we would snare a muskrat on a run in the shallows near shore. Caught a duck. Made a hell of a racket, too. Oh well, any port in a storm.

This started with coast to coast steam trains Pre civil war.
Note: the black gang (coal shovelers) on steam ships used this to some degree also.

Steam train crews survived on this during the civil war, living in the engine.

Poor truckers used this before World War 1, but WW1 military front line convoy is where this became popular.

Engine cooking became the only alternative in WW2 during the Red Ball express, there where very good news reels on this, some are still available through the public library.

Korea, and Vietnam revived this unique cooking style.

I have heard reports that it has been revived again in Kuwait..

Note: Artillery crews are said to have used hot cannons to cook their food, as far back as the French revolution.

Thank you for bring back good memories of my grandfathers stories.

A friend of mine in Ohio cooked eggs on his engine on a cross country trip. There are pics somewhere on benzworld.

What's this? John Doe, MedMech, and BHD? Memory lane.

I drove a cornpicker in Eastern WA back in '75. Tractor pulled contraption towing a hopper. Went down the row and clipped corn on each side. We'd do this thing where we'd put an ear between the exhaust manifold and block, do one row, turn it around for another, then husk it and apply butter. Yummers, what you call farm fresh.
