If there was a point to your comment, what might it be?

I suppose you think the bombadier who, after taking a sip of his coffee, unloaded umpteen thousand pounds of ordinance on a bunch of peasants knee deep in mud was brave.

This notion that throwing the largest military machine ever assembled at any mouse nibbling at our heels is actually a good idea, a BRAVE act (good Lord), is lunacy and is driving us toward international shame and ruination.

I am sorry, truly I am, that you can't see that.

Well Tracy, you said war was a fabrication which led me to believe you thought that maybe a lower form of cultural activity than some other. In response I argue that all characteristics of culture are fabrications imposed by the social fabric on the individual and thus, neither lesser nor greater than any other characteristic of culture.

In other words, SFW?

Well, Bot, I can only guess that you think murder is a high cultural activity. Shows why and where some of those criticisms that get leveled in your direction originate. SFW indeed.

I didn't come into this world to have some fool tell me which bunch of peasants to shoot up. Westmoreland was an enormous a$$ of a punk, ditto for Johnson -- a couple of "men" with way more ambition than soul.

That we are stuck on this merry-go-round of saluting, clicking heels, and following into battle any dimwad that the American public, in its vast wisdom, puts up on throne is kinda sad and tragic.

Sigh, if only I'd been brave enough to be part of that glory...

It is an enemy we are talking about not some guy on the corner of 5th and main. It is not much more to me than an obstacle to destroy or be destroyed by.

It's only a dream, but a damn good one. John Lennon said it right :

Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

See that's the problem, isn't it? When we conflict with cultural norms it is difficult to determine which is the 'right' path: that which culture says is normative or that which we believe to be correct. In our society we have lots of icons whom we admire for standing athwart the course set by society. If 6 billion people believe 'X' and I believe 'Y' should I go with X or Y?

The answer comes in at least two parts. For me, the first is, "What can I live with?" In other words, which choice does the greater harm to the things that I love the most?

Why I said, 'SFW' is that I think it is cherry-picking one's philosophy to arbitrarily say that this or that is justified killin' and this or that is murder. It is what we all do. But to attach moral superiority to one arbitrary choice over another is just not compelling.

I have to know why a particular choice is made, not just an assertion that because one makes a choice, the choice itself determines the value. Hope that clarifies it. Heck, I'm not sure about it either.

------------------------------------------------------

CMAC. You made a choice that you promote as some grand sacrifice. maybe it is to you, that's the ol' personal moral code thingy. You promote your choice as some sort of universal moral truth, I just want you to know that I my moral compass says yours is the coward's path.

Call it what you will but when your country called and young men did their duty, you copped a buzz and drove a taxi.

I've never understood why people like the lyrics to the John Lennon song Imagine.

Why would anyone want to live in a world where you believe in nothing?
