As an African-American, razor bumps are a real problem...the curly hair has a propensity to burrow under the skin and regrow, leaving a bump...you have to extract with tweezers...painful and time-consuming!

I figured out after some years of treacherous skin problems to shave against the grain. But I think my facial skin has toughened up over the years, so no matter what I do, I have very little problems with ingrown hairs these days...
I noticed that skin thing among African-Amricans when I was in the Navy. It is not universal, I mean I knew lots of guys, black, who had no problem but a smaller number were like you and actually received medical permission NOT to shave (that was needed because of gasket issues with a gasmask seal). Did you see that genetics thing hosted by Cornell West on PBS about African origins of black Americans? That's where all of this comes from. I wonder if this is related to the origin of your ancestors. I'm betting yours were from the central coastal region as (IIRC) they have more body hair than the central and sub-Saharan and Namib blacks.

My Barber shop does old fashioned straight blade shaves for about $30. It takes half an hour and they use about 15 hot towels, and a special cream. Anyway it's the best shave I've ever had. I shave everyday with Gillette's fusion (which I don't find much better than the MAch three - and the wear strip seems to run out in a matter of days), going to the barber shop I can get away with twice a week (the cost is the only thing keeping me from doing this for anything other than special occasions). The shave is so close, you can't even see any hint of facial hair once its done, your face literrally looks as bare as a baby's. By day two you look like you got a really close shave with your regular razor, and day three you can still get by without shaving - although not as clean. It looks like you shaved, but not so close.

I have a tough beard and the best I've tried so far is the basic throwaway Good News razors (no pivot, no lubricating strip), and a creme with high lanolin content.

Which gives me cause to ponder: If you could elect to irreversibly depilate your face, would you? I think I would.

Just jokin' about the cojones

I was thinking of kiwis. That's what they remind me of. Guess that's why they never looked like something I wanted to eat.

You, being a botanist WOULD know that. I'm trying to eat more fruit these days, but have taken to it very gradually. I haven't made it past the stuff that was around when I was a kid in NC. Where the hell did kiwis come from anyhow?

A flightless bird in NZ lays them. We eat the raw, unfertilized ones. Like chicken eggs, sorta. If you leave it on a counter too long it will start to transmogrify into a kiwi bird by first turning grey and hairy. But since it isn't fertilized it ceases in mid-molt. Try it, you wife will love the experiment after a few weeks.

An alternative hypothesis is that it grows on a vine and is originally a tropic fruit from South China, Indochina, and the adjacent islands. It was intro'd to ANZ and later to the USA.

Round-eyes don't like fruit with furren names so they thought, "Hey, who hates shoe polish?" and named it kiwi for marketing.
