This one does not surf; her younger sister does, however. She is the one with the Volvo V70 (wagon) and the roof rack.

But...you can fit a roof rack on top of the Rabbit and carry bikes, surfboards and kayaks. Well, not all at once though....

I'll post pics today or tomorrow.

If you canmanage w/o the auto tranny, you will save over $1,000.00. The alloy tire package is a bargain at $400.00, unless you can do better for tires and wheels in the aftermarket.

The sunroof is pricey, at $1,000.00 and my wife and I argued about that. I won and we got the sunroof...I like driving with mine open and I think my daughter will too.

The only other option is ESP...Electronic Stabilization Program. On a small car like that, I think it is a good idea and the price is right, $450.00/sticker.

The car comes fully loaded, as std equipment. It includes a nice stereo system and 6 CD in-dash changer with MP3 capability. You can add XM or Sirius, but I didn't think it was worth it.

The car even comes with tire pressure monitors, which I think is a great feature in a small car. It also has airbags coming out of every corner. The car passed the side and frontal crash tests and received a 5 star rating.

Normally I wouldn't have considered a V-Dub,but she likes the old Rabbits and this one seems to be nicely equipped and well put together...

The new car smell is sweet...but for myself, unless I could afford the car I want and exactly the way I want it (new) I think that a good used car is fine. We have owned a lot of new cars in my family, but I always seem to end up with the oldies but goodies. When I had my '84 300SD, it was a point of pride with me to see how far I could keep driving it w/o putting a lot of money into it....my operating costs, per mile driven was REALLY low...

How about I just get a bra and some water ballons, and call it good enough to drive it?

Least she's not in high school, I HATE it when parents buy their kids new cars, only to drive them to the high school touture lots

^^Keyed twice, sideswiped once... And then I played bumper cars with my friends mazduhh

It's good fun... inch up really close, turn on your brights, and nudge their car at like 1mph. watch for finger out of the sunroof

Rabbit is awesome

I really like the old ones, and the 2.5 inline 5 is a torquey little engine, but I wish they offered it with the TDI...

I was amazed that an "Economy" car like the Rabbit only gets 22/30, while competitors from Mazda, Honda, and the like are almost getting 40

But hey, its a five cylinder and with the 6 speed auto, she will be able to roast a few ricers here and there..

Let me know about the Turbo/Intercooler upgrade that will be coming soon ...oh and if its black, the Bronze/Goldish or Gunmetal BBS's look AWESOME

rabbit convertible

I have a Triumph TR6 and became friends with another TR6 owner who lives close by. Years go by and he gets married, has kids. One day he pulls up in a rabbit convertible designer edition model. He tells me his wife convinced him the TR6 wasn't a family car and sold it for the rabbit.

I had a hard time keeping a straight face.

Sweet...a lot quieter than the 5 cylinder in my volvo V70.

I wish I could figure out how to record the sound and post it as a file here.

I love the looks of the rabbit. Imay be in the market for a new car later this year and am looking at the Scion xB (yup, that one!). All my friends think they suck. I don't really care, but one said hey I'd get a Rabbit and the money is close. I checked the Rabbits at the local VW dealers and there does seem to be a premium tacked on by dealers. Too bad. Sounds like bone stock with some wheels would be the way to go fro me, though!

Where are you located? Shop around and don't let some greedy dealer stick you with a "market adjustment" premium. I checked wiht one dealer and he told me that as a favor he would "only" charge me a $1,000.00 premium.

I got mine for below sticker. You can do it too.

I looked around at other similar cars, the Matrix, the Vibe, the Caliber, etc.

In my opinion the Rabbit has the best build quality of that whole group.

Tonight I washed it, gassed it (it got 27 mpg in around town and feeway driving since we picked it up yesterday, I expect it to do better as the engine gets in a few more miles) and then drove it around town...damn, I felt like a kid again.

My daughter may not get it after all....

Good for you, denying 'em the "additional dealer markup". Probably they'll be practically giving the cars away in a year or so when the initial frenzy and demand subsides....

Maybe you should at least keep it yourself till it gets "properly broken in",
let her use the Volvo wagon meanwhile...

I think the build quality is pretty good (I've read) on the VWs again, though some of them have had electric problems (Golf, Passat) in previous years.

They sell really well in Europe, and I'm sure it will be much safer and sturdier than some Vibe or a Matrix.
