Probably forgot he was sailing a boat and not driving a car on the Beltway in DC!

I'd bet they were environmentalists trying to stop a tanker or other freighter.

Firstly I hope he was killed, not only was that the most stupid thing I have seen in a very long time, that was a nice sailboat that was trashed. The crew is just as guilty. I would have grabbed the wheel from that jerk long before that happend.

That wasn't a right of way incident, that was a stuipd idiot showing us that Darwin's theory is still at work.

That's hysterical!!! I love the way that one guy is just sitting there on bow of the boat. I'd be jumping off with the quickness...

Well one of the reasons for having a bow man is to spot potential collisions and warn the helmsman of them. But that is when you are racing and may not be able to see the other guy.

So I can only conclude that this particular bow man was blind.

Your right maybe I shouldn't have said I hope he was killed. I was caught up in the amount of stupidity that was being beamed over my screen.

Yeah I have never crewed on a boat before, ever.

Wow - That's an odd one.

Looks to me like the two guys in the back were not paying attention, or something. One appears to jump ship just before the boat goes hard to port. Maybe they were down below for something. One guy seems to be facing aft as perhaps to just be coming up. Odd (very) that the bowman just sits there. I’d sure like to know more on this one. I’ll go searching.

As for Meds “right of way“. It’s not a sailboat when motoring. Even under sail, he must yield to the (much) larger ship. I’m willing to bet the charts there state yield to ferry traffic. Especially in an inland water way, as that appears to be in. Then there’s the yield to starboard issue here. This guy had to be distracted beyond comprehension. That, or just really...

“What we see there is obviously the ill-conceived decision of the helmsman, and no one else.” I agree. But it does appear that he jumps prior to the hard to port. He’s certainly heading up on the rail prior. I can’t really see a boat of that size equipped with a tiller or auto pilot rig that he could be pulling with him going over.

Also - Perhaps Hatts comment on death was just meant in a “Hope he’s not in any gene pool “ context. I might have to agree there.

Why don't you write him? It seems like he is in need of a boat repair session. Just like the lawyers who will send mail to an accident victim, maybe you should send him an "I think I can help your boat" mail.

Right of way is man made. It doesn't hold a candle to the laws of Physics which will not be ignored.

I'm no boating expert in ANY sense of the word, but yeah, I saw that the helmsman didn't take corrective action until it was too late...and then crossed the bow of the larger boat instead of veering off to one side...looked like a panic move.

As far as the guy on the bow of the sailboat, he appeared to brace himself for the impact in the last second before the video loses sight of him...I dunno, considering the turn of events there, he may have felt like he would have a better chance of surviving by staying on the craft instead of jumping ship. I don't think he could have gotten out of the way fast enough to not get mowed down by the larger craft!

I used the right of wat because it came to mind, the big ship wins by 1# the big wins and ability to manuver.

The guy probably left a youngster at the helm while he got sails ready.

I've had my share of similar situations with the ferry. Fortunately, mine is far more powerful, and much smaller and lighter than the ferry indicated in the clip.

The problem is judgment on the part of the operator in the smaller boat. They make a decision to avoid the larger boat but don't have a clue of distance and speed. They are sure that their decision is correct but, once they make it, they have no other option.

I had a medium sized cruiser decide that he must turn in front of the ferry to head down the channel back to Bay Shore. He disappeared under the bow (we're doing 19 kts.) as I grabbed all three throttles and pulled them to neutral. Fortunately missed the stupid SOB by a couple of feet (I'm guessing).

Then I went and got a new pair of shorts...........
