The post office is going to be successful in returning my funds? Somehow, I sincerely doubt this..........
You don't call the post office in that situation. You call the buyer's local sheriff's department.

Has it worked for you in the past?

I've heard the statement "mail fraud" on many occasions. Anyone ever successfully recoup their money??

Paypal

Paypal links to your payment source(s) like bank aco**** or credit card. They don't accept outside forms of payment. I have had reasonably good luck with them as a buyer. As a seller they take a percentage that can add up. I agree with the guy who says use a specific account for them.

Just to be clear - is it the case that the only payment method accepted by this particular seller is PayPal?

If that's the case, then you can either
(1) use PayPal,
(2) politely ask the seller if he or she would be willing to accept a different form of payment, or
(3) forget about that particular auction.

I've used PayPal frequently during the past several years, and have yet to have a problem.

For purchases, I always use a credit card as the funding source. If I ever have a problem that can't be resolved directly with the seller or through PayPal, then I'd just as soon have the option of letting my credit card company go to bat for me. I also might as well get whatever goodies (e.g., cash back) my CC company is giving me for purchases.

For receiving money, I'm perfectly happy to accept PayPal. For me, I think the fees and risks (e.g., customer chargeback) are more than offset by the convenience and "warm fuzzy feelings" that PayPal gives many of the buyers.

As others have already suggested, if one is linking a bank account to a PayPal account, then there are advantages to establishing a bank account exclusively for that purpose.

It's fine. I've used it for literally hundreds of transactions online in the past few years, as both buyer and seller... Mostly eBay stuff, but also elsewhere. Zero problems to report.
