Slightly less ancient was a French carving (1926) that we removed from the den of a large house in SF's Pacific Heights. The house was originally owned by Timothy Hopkins, son of railroad magnate Mark Hopkins. The new buyers had young children and didn't want the large - maybe 6' x 4' - work depicting 4 dogs taking down a wild boar. It was an excellent work, at least in terms of competency. You could see the frantic terror of the boar and the snarling ferocity of the dogs with their teeth gripping it.

We were told that Sotheby's auctioned it to a hunting lodge back east. This was in '97, I had no cell phone cam in those days and somehow neglected to take photos of it, and I spent a few days with it and other carvings in the room.

The Hungry Cyclist | Bespoke Pedal Powered Food Adventures | Get On Your Bikes And Eat – Wild Boar Hunting In France

Wild boar have been hunted in France for over two thousand years. The Romans were keen hunters and in the 14th century prominent hog hunting King Philip IV died when an enraged boar charged down his horse. Widespread in France, wild-boar, sus scrofa or sanglier as it is known by the French locals, are much maligned by farmers who blame this powerful omnivore for the destruction of crops. But as well as being a pest its lean meat is delicious and much prized in the French kitchen. Hunted with dogs, some which are given protective Kevlar vests to offer protection from the boars tusks, 10′s of thousands of sanglier are killed in France each season.

I can only imagine that there are butchering services available if one is unwilling to go to that trouble - not to mention pork must be dealt with properly or else that 'free' dog food would have a steep price.
Butchering wild game, especially swine, can be a chancy thing for a slaughterhouse. It is easy to contaminate the facilities and run the risk of health department sanctions (at least in LA & MS. Dunno about other states).

Concerning feral swine, whatever the motivations are for impacting the population -- it's all good. It's like concern for Aedes aegypti -- frankly my dear, I don't give a damn. Kill them.

I have it: we'll have hunting gangs, comprised of prisoners wielding dogs and clubs, to harvest wild boar for use in feeding prisoners. Armed guards on horseback would accompany no doubt. Then we'd have have slaughterhouse/packinghouses also staffed by prisoners. The swine would be captured live so as to be fresh at the slaughterhouse. Or perhaps as you suggest, they could be castrated and put in feed lots for some period of time.

To further raise funds for prison operation, select cuts of the bush pork could be sold in France, where they dig the stuff, supposedly. Wouldn't compete with US private sector pork that way.

I guess it WOULD sound outrageous to someone who had never been involved in hunting, or even life on the farm.

Protecting your hunting dog is a little different.

Well I am a bird watcher, currently on the lookout for an attractive specimen of the somewhat elusive species known as the double breasted bed thrasher
